William O. Smith (Bill), composer, clarinettist and teacher, was born in 1926, in Sacramento, U.S.A. In his
teens he was already playing in a symphony orchestra as well as his own jazz ensemble. He later studied at the
Juilliard School of Music and then with Darius Milhaud. Whilst still a student he met Dave Brubeck and was a
founder member of the Dave Brubeck Octet and has been associated with him ever since. For his compositions
he was to receive many accolades, including the Prix de Rome. He is one of the first to combine modern jazz
with classical compositional techniques.
