2 flamenco ® Introduction
Tunstall
presents its revolutionary
nursecall system.
Tunstall – for better
hospital communication
Communication is the basis for
all human interaction. It happens
every day in our contacts with
other people. If we can keep
communication simple, we will
facilitate smooth processes and
ensure that everyone knows
exactly what is happening.
In hospitals, where lots of people with different needs come
together, communication is particularly vital. Everyone has a
different perspective. Patients expect a quick response when
they have desires or feel bad, while doctors and nurses may
have a large number of patients to look after. Especially at
night this can become a real challenge. There are patients
who can’t get around by themselves, for whom transfers to
other parts of the building constantly have to be arranged –
from ward to theatre, from recovery to ward, to physiotherapy
and back or to the lab for a blood sample. In addition,
there are so many other tasks that need to be arranged and
coordinated as efficiently as possible. Hospital managers
shoulder a great responsibility – not only for patients and
staff, but also for commercial success and robust operations.
And to meet all these different concerns and interests. Each
hospital depends on an optimum solution to its communication
needs to meet all these different concerns and interests.
Good communication stands out due to clear messages that
everyone involved can understand. More than ever, with
hospitals competing among themselves, getting the message

is crucial. A hospital must treat patients as clients, respect
their preferences and expectations and seek to accommodate
them to survive in the market.
The ongoing dialogue with our customers that we have pursued
in over 40 years of experience in this field has enabled
us to develop technological leadership. Our solutions bear
the hallmarks of generous flexibility, supreme quality,
extremely simple installation and configuration and, not less
important, outstanding design. Naturally our products and
systems comply with the German nursecall system standard
DIN VDE 0843, with its stringent security and operational
requirements. We know all about planning the communication
between hundreds of patients, nursing staff, physicians,
administrators, support functions, technicians, supplies and
waste disposal and about implementing the design reliably
and efficiently. We would be delighted to convince you our
nurse call systems can help you to simplify processes. Just ask!
In many European countries, health care systems are experiencing
radical change. The reasons and the consequences
are very different and this guides our ideas and our product
development.
There are some markets, for example, where the priority is to
modernise existing hospitals. On the one hand, patients are
staying fewer nights, but on the other hand demographics
have brought higher case loads, so the available beds and
rooms provide appropriate capacity. The primary objective is
to raise technical standards, enhancing patient comfort and
optimising organisational flows. Our task here is to respond
to the specific environment and its particular requirements.
A smooth transition from “old” to “new” is decisive. After all,
operations must continue without interruption. In most cases
even a brief closure is inconceivable. We have gained a lot
of experience with such scenarios and our competence
in the field is extensive.
There are other countries witnessing a broad wave
of newbuilds, and what they need from our product
is quite different. Usually there is a keen
interest in innovative solutions with features
such as listable interfaces to hospital management
systems or adaptation to personnel security systems.
Here again, we are the right people to deal with.
Just ask. For all the reassurance you need.
When it comes to making decisions about systems and products, there are a myriad possibilities and unforeseeable
economic considerations that complicate the process. How can you decide on the right system when
demands and technologies are constantly changing? You may not be able to see into the future, but you can
plan for it! With flamenco ® , you’re perfectly prepared for every stage of the journey into the future. Thanks
to a standardised system with a modular design that can be installed in rooms with the utmost flexibility.
Only a long-lasting solution
is a cost-effective one.
The decision to install a call system is always a long-term
move, since it demands future-oriented planning, long-term
installation and needs-based user training. Only if your call
system is able to respond flexibly to changed organisational
demands or communication needs will your decision pay off
in the long term too. Apparently low-cost solutions can
quickly turn out to be expensive mistakes. With flamenco ® ,
all new developments and adaptations of features can be
integrated easily both now and in the future. And all without
any changes to the cable infrastructure, expensive installations,
dust or mess. Just like in the flamenco dance, the
technology develops but the substance remains the same.
Compatibility means integration,
not rejection.
When the decision to replace or change a system is being
made, costs and complexity play a crucial role. Tunstall has
therefore developed solution concepts that facilitate the
straightforward integration of existing products and the
smooth continuation of the hospital's operation. Decide for
yourself whether you want to replace individual components,
use existing cable networks or carry out a complete system
change.
flamenco ® ’s superlative compatibility affords healthcare providers
additional room for manoeuvre despite limited budgets.
You can retain existing assets, reduce ongoing operating costs
and profit from new ideas and innovative system concepts
aimed at ensuring even more efficient organisation and
communication.
Compatibility creates freedom:
• Interfaces to previous systems
• The Tunstall refurbishment concept
allows new systems to be installed
with virtually no interruptions to
ongoing hospital operation.
• Integration of several system
generations
• Use of existing routings and sockets
• Upgrade to new products

18 flamenco ® Interfaces
Satisfy security requirements safely.
Call systems are designed to request help quickly, reliably
and in a targeted manner in emergency situations and situations
of danger. When it comes to human life and health, the
demands of communication and safety are inseparable. To
safeguard these demands, call systems are standardised to
DIN VDE 0834.
As more and more systems are connected and global network
structures become more and more widespread,
the demand is growing for a standardised platform
that can handle all communication tasks. The
flamenco ® system complies fully with all the
applicable guidelines and is based on an intrinsically
safe system with its own infrastructure.
Tunstall is committed to closely examining the
risks of failure, the degree of system support
required and the resulting follow-on costs long
before the solution is actually implemented.
The flamenco ® safety principles
1. Where call systems are connected to
other systems, human safety is always
the top priority.
2. Integration into existing networks or
link-up via interfaces is possible at any
time, provided the requirements of
DIN VDE 0834 are strictly adhered to.
3. Each individual component used and
the entire infrastructure must satisfy
the high demands on a call system
in order to allow the creation of a
standard-compliant, safe system.

Security and IP
aren’t a contradiction.
The right use of IP-based solutions can represent a useful
addition to regular call systems and communication
solutions. But not everything that is technically possible
can meet the stringent standards required.
Managing the flood of information.
The link to the OSY-ControlCenter gives you direct access to
information from all connected information systems. This
information might be personal data from the HIS, including
medical data, names or care instructions, or it could equally
be information from facilities management. To ensure
seamless documentation, all system events can be logged
with the time, date, ward and room identifiers and exported
into other applications. Of course, PrimusGlobal+ supports
OSY: it may sound like a technical abbreviation, but it describes
a whole philosophy, the OpenSystem philosophy.
It provides the operational security for integrating different
external systems via interfaces. The OSY ControlCenter is
at the heart of all data flows and voice communication.
The OSYnet Safety Controller grants additional security.
You decide on the best solution in each department.
flamenco ® is an open platform. You can consider all options
available for your communication system whatever delivers
the most benefits for your telephone and alarm networks
and patient environment. Smart OSYlinks make sure everything
communicates smoothly. And a modular approach is
the best springboard for easy alterations and extensions.
Proven bus technology performs
great feats with small parts.
Intelligent networking starts at the small end. The RAN bus
knits together all the components in the room so skilfully
that they carry on doing a reliable job even if another part
has failed. The smart ComTerminal is the link between
the room bus and the OSYnet group bus. OSY symbolises
independently secure systems that can shield themselves
from an error elsewhere and continue working reliably even
during an operational malfunction. You can trust flamenco ®
Plug and Play increases security and
cuts installation time.
Where refurbishment is concerned, flamenco ® is perfectly
prepared for when a change of components is needed:
simply reconfigure sub-sections or quickly exchange individual
peripherals via the Plug and Play approach. Since the
bus technology extends into the room, configuration of the
plug-in modules is simplicity itself. Even extensive functional
improvements can be loaded easily via a software upgrade
without interfering with ongoing hospital operation.
24 flamenco ® Innovations
Plug and Play
The small ideas
Implement changes easily in no time at all.
With easy-to-install Plug and Play components, the amount
of effort associated with installations is reduced, saving
valuable working time and increasing safety and security.
Prior considerations of specialist lines, the number of cables
or types of buttons are no longer needed, since flamenco ®
can largely be integrated into existing cable networks. In the
next stage, the plugs are pre-installed and connected via
3-wire RAN technology. The devices then simply need to be
plugged in. The final stage, the system configuration stage,
is also quick and convenient.

Accessories with built-in material protection.
The equipment and cable clamps put an end to the cable
spaghetti by the patient’s bed, thereby ensuring more safety.
The precise routing ensures that all cables remain out of the
way, namely on the bed rail. The smart, self-releasing adapter
avoids unnecessary material damage due to inattention: if
the patient inadvertently pulls the pear push switch or patient
Cost effectiveness is the Holy Grail of hospital management.
This is why we use LED modules throughout. Their service
life is 20 times higher than conventional bulbs, and they
consume only a quarter of the energy. But that's not all:
their longer service life also means that the amount of maintenance
required is close to zero. Improve your operational
reliability thanks to LED modules: with their outstanding
failure safety, not a single patient call will go unnoticed. Cost
Training courses of the highest calibre.
Call systems comply with the strict DIN VDE 0834 safety
standard and undergo regular maintenance. As a result of
today’s demands on organisation and process optimisation,
systems have been developed that are pretty comprehensive,
including everything from simple contact switches and links
to telecommunications systems to the integration of systems
into IT networks. These complex solutions require specialist
knowledge, experience and not least a strong sense of
responsibility from specially trained personnel.
Problems can often be avoided by taking simple steps, such
as by carrying out the prescribed inspections and maintenance
checks. Consequently, we offer you technical training
courses and seminars, delivered at our training centre by
experienced systems engineers, for our various systems and
product generations. Technical personnel in hospitals and
staff from installation companies can therefore be trained
to make them experts in call systems, providing suitable
contacts on site who can intervene rapidly on site and, if
a problem arises, take the correct action as defined by
standards and technical practices.
of being in the best company.
communication for both buildings, i.e.. the Campus Charité
Mitte too, from a single switchboard at the Virchow campus.
As a result, the calls from 2 buildings and 1,600 beds are
now coordinated and organised via a single switchboard.
Südharz Hospital, Nordhausen, Germany:
The nursecall system in the Südharz hospital is the heart of
the entire hospital’s communication and organisation system.
From a central point, the ComCenter, trained nurses handle
all patient calls. With each call, all of the patient’s key information
is displayed directly on the monitor. This saves time –
time that the nursing staff can dedicate to the patient. Each
year, around 44,000 kilometres of walking are also saved. The
hospital moreover uses many other options offered by the
flamenco ® ComCenter: to provide greater clarity, MRSA/ORSA
rooms are marked in red, in order to enable these rooms to
be identified at a glance and exclude them from certain procedures
for organisational reasons. flamenco ® ’s flexibility is also
harnessed by allowing ward limits to be virtually redrawn, allowing
multi-use rooms to be put together for area-based care.
Johannes Wesling Hospital, Minden, Germany:
When a new hospital was built, the first in North Rhine-
Westphalia in 20 years, public interest was as great as
the competition among the suppliers. Tunstall, however,
impressed right across the board with its flamenco ®
nursecall system. Since February 2008, the 28 wards
of the around 1,000-bed hospital have been managed
in a local organisational structure. Thanks to
the intelligent connection of the nursecall system to
the WLAN telephone system, constant availability is
guaranteed in all locations.
