The allocation of rooms to wards and other organisational entities is independent of the layout
of the physical data structure. It is for this independence that nursing tasks can be organised
to comply with current demands. The system allows for virtually any organisational form, i.e.
centralised, de-centralised or a combination of both. Changing of or adapting the system to
new situations can be realised any time by the user and without modifying the system infra‐
structure.
Cable network
The installation is realised using a data cable, e.g. CAT5 (AWG 23), CAT7 (AWG 23 or 22)
or a commercially available communication cable IY(ST)Y.. . Electric power to all components
is provided through a separate net - again using commercially available cables, e.g. NYM
2x2.5 mm 2 . Other wire gauges may be possible or necessary depending on the length of the
cable installations and on resultant voltage drops along these lines.
Installation / Montage
The devices are mounted in commercially available back boxes. This is another feature which
facilitates any change of individual products at a later date, particularly inside of rooms. The
products are supplied ready for plug-and-play, and they require no additional assembly or
mounting work. All devices feature plug-in connections which again facilitates any later ex‐
change of such devices.
Peripheral devices
The devices for the rooms are designed for plug-and-play. Switches and patient devices fea‐
ture protection class IP54, and as such they can easily be cleaned and disinfected and they
are easily identified as parts of the nurse call system. Rather largely dimensioned buttons for
attending staff ensure save and positive use in any situation. All indicating devices are lowenergy
designs fitted with long-term LED technology. The room lamp can be fitted with a dec‐
orative frame to match the general interior decoration of the house. Design and structure are
unique and subject to intellectual property rights.
Patient devices
The individual control devices are specifically designed to best meet the demands of patients
and nursing staff as well. What distinguishes these devices are simple handling, easy clean‐
ing and disinfecting as well as their suitability for rough every-day use. There are several ver‐
sions to suit virtually any needs.
Aside from Tunstall devices, other make devices may also be used and integrated into the
overall system. The open concept allows for the use of many other peripheral devices from
other makes, e.g. simple patient telephones with integrated nurse call, LCD TV sets or com‐
fort units with hands-free speech and other special functions. The functions of the original
nurse call system will not be affected. This unique arrangement ensures a high functional reli‐
