Preliminary notes: Flamenco 

General 

The Flamenco system is a universally applicable communication platform meeting all de‐ 

mands put forth to modern care organisations in hospitals, nursing homes and comparable 

institutions. In an ideal manner, Flamenco combines a nurse call system with the possibilities 

of modern telecommunication and intelligent data networking. Based on self-sufficient tech‐ 

nology with intelligent network solutions, the Flamenco solution provides for exceptional func‐ 

tional reliability. The unique separation of physical wiring and organisational combination of 

rooms allows for maximum freedom for the system layout and as such for any later use or 

expansion. Excellent speech quality, devices and components suitable for everyday use and 

simple handling are foremost features which ensure the efficient support of patients and staff 

in daily nursing routines. 

The peripheral components, such as corridor displays and loudspeakers can be used by 

other systems, too. Flamenco has been prepared with the appropriate interfaces to connect 

or integrate other make installations. 

Standards 

The nurse call system complies with DIN VDE 0834 Part 1 and 2, including the standards 

which are referred to in this standard. 

System structure 

The system features a hierarchic structure and it is designed and arranged to the principle 

of a bus line. The intelligent room bus RAN combines all room-related devices, and in itself 

it is a fully functional entity. The individual devices communicate among themselves and con‐ 

stitute the basis for the nurse call system. Intelligence is integrated in all devices, and as such 

even call switch and room lamp can process and display incoming messages. There is no 

need for an overhead control arrangement for the rooms. The installation in the room itself 

can be realised as bus, star or mesh. 

The room network is the basis, and the next hierarchic level is a group bus, the OSYnet. It 

links all users of a physical group. The central control, i.e. the OSI-ControlCenter, virtually 

serves as the hub for all OSYnet connections, and coordination is effected from this central 

unit. For larger projects, several OSY-ControlCenters are linked in a joint network. To provide 

for even higher functional safety and reliability, the integration of one or more de-centrally op‐ 

erating OSYnet-SafetyControllers into the system structure can be realised. 

The structured system topology, combined with automatic fault detection, provides for an ex‐ 

ceptionally high functional safety and reliability in the whole system.

Organisational forms 



The allocation of rooms to wards and other organisational entities is independent of the layout 

of the physical data structure. It is for this independence that nursing tasks can be organised 

to comply with current demands. The system allows for virtually any organisational form, i.e. 

centralised, de-centralised or a combination of both. Changing of or adapting the system to 

new situations can be realised any time by the user and without modifying the system infra‐ 

structure. 

Cable network 

The installation is realised using a data cable, e.g. CAT5 (AWG 23), CAT7 (AWG 23 or 22) 

or a commercially available communication cable IY(ST)Y.. . Electric power to all components 

is provided through a separate net - again using commercially available cables, e.g. NYM 

2x2.5 mm 2 . Other wire gauges may be possible or necessary depending on the length of the 

cable installations and on resultant voltage drops along these lines. 

Installation / Montage 

The devices are mounted in commercially available back boxes. This is another feature which 

facilitates any change of individual products at a later date, particularly inside of rooms. The 

products are supplied ready for plug-and-play, and they require no additional assembly or 

mounting work. All devices feature plug-in connections which again facilitates any later ex‐ 

change of such devices. 

Peripheral devices 

The devices for the rooms are designed for plug-and-play. Switches and patient devices fea‐ 

ture protection class IP54, and as such they can easily be cleaned and disinfected and they 

are easily identified as parts of the nurse call system. Rather largely dimensioned buttons for 

attending staff ensure save and positive use in any situation. All indicating devices are lowenergy 

designs fitted with long-term LED technology. The room lamp can be fitted with a dec‐ 

orative frame to match the general interior decoration of the house. Design and structure are 

unique and subject to intellectual property rights. 

Patient devices 

The individual control devices are specifically designed to best meet the demands of patients 

and nursing staff as well. What distinguishes these devices are simple handling, easy clean‐ 

ing and disinfecting as well as their suitability for rough every-day use. There are several ver‐ 

sions to suit virtually any needs. 

Aside from Tunstall devices, other make devices may also be used and integrated into the 

overall system. The open concept allows for the use of many other peripheral devices from 

other makes, e.g. simple patient telephones with integrated nurse call, LCD TV sets or com‐ 

fort units with hands-free speech and other special functions. The functions of the original 

nurse call system will not be affected. This unique arrangement ensures a high functional reli‐

ability of the overall system also in case of faults or interference in the telecommunication 

installation. 

Ward consoles 

Ward consoles with a variety of performance features can be placed at the nurse station. 

ComStation CT - A simple desktop ComTerminal with the functions of a room terminal plus 

zone nursing, ward coupling and fault messages. Plug connection to the group bus OSYnet 

via a connection socket. 

ComStation BUS - A ward console with all functions for the handling of calls, actuating of an‐ 

nouncements and for organisational tasks in the ward. Plug connection to the group bus 

OSYnet via a connection socket. 

ComStation TEL - A ward console based on a LAN telephone and fitted with all functions for 

the handling of calls, actuating of announcements and for organisational tasks in the ward. 

ComStation PC - A ward console as a PC workstation with the management software Primus- 

Global + . Separate speech unit for maximum speech comfort. Linking of several workstations 

possible via a locally available net. 

Interfaces 

The Flamenco system features a substantial amount of interfaces. There is a specifically ad‐ 

apted interface module OSYlink for virtually every possible application. These interfaces are 

directly connected to the group bus OSYnet and can be adapted at any later date. There is 

a simple method to integrate announcements, to link other make devices and to control and 

monitor group or direction lamps. 

Central LAN interfaces are provided for handling the data exchange with other make systems. 

Depending on the application, communication is effected either directly via the OSY-Control‐ 

Center or via a separate server. Where simple coupling tasks must be realised, serial inter‐ 

faces can be used. 

Coupling with private branch exchanges is also supported. The transparent system structure 

allows for linking via analogue connections a/b or via VoIP connections.

Safety / Security 



The safety concept for Flamenco is based on a self-sufficient and independent system plat‐ 

form. There are no moving parts in the servers, and as such the operation is wear-free. In case 

of a fault or failure of systems or components which are linked via interfaces, the basic func‐ 

tions of the nurse call system will be sustained. The functional safety is applicable for the 

whole system and not limited to ward-related functions. In case of a failure of individual com‐ 

ponents, a minimum function is ensured at all times. In a worst case situation, a call will solely 

activate the room lamp. All system data are permanently secured against any mains supply 

failure, and configuration data are redundantly saved in the system. 

System care 

The use of plug-and-play technology, particularly in room environments, facilitates system 

care - and it is a definite cost-saving factor. No special know-how nor any special tools are 

required when replacing individual components or assemblies. The complete system can be 

monitored and serviced from a central location. This may be on-location or via remote servi‐ 

cing. A specially developed (software) tool, the SystemOrganizer, has been provided for sys‐ 

tem configuration. This software was also used during previous system planning. The user 

is in a position to change and modify any setting at the system to adapt the system to the 

specific demands of the project. Access to the system is available at different levels using 

the appropriate passwords 

Compatibility 

Special features enable the Flamenco system to be used in the renewal and updating of older 

installations. The system does not require extensive cabling, and in many cases, the existing 

infrastructure in a building can be used in support of Flamenco. This includes both current 

wiring as well as back boxes. Simple contact modules are available for the coupling of other 

make systems. A range of mounting elements and special interfaces are provided to link Fla‐ 

menco with older Tunstall installations. 

Summary 

Flamenco is a modern, flexible communication system with the 'future built in', i.e. it can be 

adapted to the ever changing and increasing demands of today's nursing organisations. Even 

where a complex integration with other systems is realised, the nurse call system as such will 

remain to serve as a self-sufficient and independent instrument for patients and staff. All com‐ 

ponents of such rather complex system structures can be serviced, updated, modernised and 

replaced by other, more advanced solutions. This feature ensures the required high functional 

safety and prevents possible negative interactions or interference with or from subordinate 

or parallel systems. In case of faults or failures in telecommunication systems, data networks, 

TV installations or at other interfaces, the function of the nurse call system will be sustained. 

Flamenco provides for maximum freedom in planning, it is a safe capital investment, and its 

performance is future-oriented, indeed

SystemOrganizer 



The SystemOrganizer software is a planning and 

configuration tool for the Flamenco system. It pro‐ 

vides the user interface to the OSY-ControlCenter 

and enables the complete parameter setting for the 

call system. 

The handling and the subdivision follows Flamen‐ 

co's basic principle. The physical parameters are 

strictly separated from the organisational assign‐ 

ments. 

The access is password protected by 5 different 

user levels. Herewith is ensured, that each user 

group (planning office, care management...) can 

only make the settings, which are important for him/ 

her. 

Right from the planning stage the SystemOrgani‐ 

zer is used to enter the project structures of buil‐ 

dings, wards and rooms. All parameters can be mo‐ 

dified every time to adapt to the respective needs. 

By using the data from the beginning of the plan‐ 

ning over the whole life cycle of the system it will ne‐ 

ver be necessary to enter data twice. All data can 

be copied, saved and read out from an OSY-Con‐ 

trolCenter. Herewith it is ensured, that every time

The OSY-ControlCenter is the management and 

control centre for the Flamenco nurse call system. 

It monitors and controls all communications be‐ 

tween the various system components. The Con‐ 

trolCenter also serves as the central interface for 

the input and output of data, voice communications 

and system messages. It allows for the central sys‐ 

tem access for servicing the system and for later 

expansions via remote access. The modular setup 

allows for the adaptation to different sizes of sys‐ 

tems. Several OSY-ControlCenters may be 

coupled. Because of the strict separation between 

the physical system structure and the later orga‐ 

nisation of the nurse call system, the allocation of 

system users is not bound to a specific pattern. 

This provides for maximum flexibility in the system 

layout.

The OSY-ControlCenter is a self-sufficient system 

unit and it is independent of supplementary exter‐ 

nal equipment such as networks and LAN compo‐ 

nents. There are no moving parts and the system 

operates virtually wear-free. Even if faults occur at 

systems or components which are connected via 

interfaces and/or networks, the basic function of 

the nurse call system will be sustained. This func‐ 

tional security is valid for the whole system and it 

is not limited to specific, ward-related functions. To 

further enhance the functional safety and security, 

additional, de-centralised safety controllers can be 

integrated into the system structure. 

Basic layout 

The OSY-ControlCenter features a modular struc‐ 

ture and it is designed and arranged to best cope 

with the desired performance spectrum. 

The number of modules required for a particular 

project or installation depends on the total number 

of users to be linked to the system and on the 

number of internal and external communications to 

be provided for. Additional interfaces can be added
