En el propio instante en que el sol
asomaba su fogazón sobre el manglar
de laisla, la culebra de brillo de
la chimbera cruzó entre dos aguas,
curveante y repentina. La malla, veloz,
se abrió en el aire a modo de flor volante
y traslúcida, graciosa y trágica, voraz y
anfibia y, haciendo chi flar los plomos,
se hundió en la linfa con la seguridad
del felino que cae sobre la presa. Todo
quedó en suspenso. Había ojos en cada
onda espe rando, esperando, mientras
se recogía la tarraya. En la punta venía la
col mena de espejuelos de la chimbera.
Era como un sol de plata, brillando al
sol de oro; bolsa de azogue210 , corazón
de estero. Las chimberas caiban en la
matata, como gotas de acero derretido,
chisporroteantes y enredadizas.
De pronto, Genaro se quedó en
suspenso. Entre las últimas chimberas
venía una estrellemar de seis puntas.
La cogió con los dedos y le empezó a
dar vueltas.
—¡Una estreyemar de seis puntas,
baboso: ya jodí!...
—¿Por qué, vos?
—No tiagás el bruto; ¿no sabés ques un
ambuleto? ¿Quel que lo carga no lentra
el corvo?

At the same instant in which the sun was
bringing his bonfire over the mangrove
swamp in the island, the shiny snake of
fish crossed between two waters, curvy
and sudden. The net, quick, opened in
the air like a flying flower, translucent,
graceful and tragic, voracious and
amphibious, and, making the leads
whistle, sank down in the lilies with the
confidence of the feline that jumps over
the prey. It was all in suspense. There
were eyes on every wave, waiting, while
they pulled back the net. The behive of
bait for the fish was on the other side of
the boat. It was like a silver sun, shining
to the golden sun; restless bag, heart
of marsh. The little fish were dropping
on the bag like drops of melted iron,
spluttering and confusing.
Suddenly, Genaro was in suspense.
Among the last fish there was a starfish
of six points. He picked it up with his
fingers and began to turn it around.
“A starfish of six points, pal. I’m done!”
“Why is that?”
“Don’t act like a fool. Don’t you know
what an ambulet is? That he who owns
it can stand the wrath of the machete?”
