104 The witch doctor wrapped his bony hands around her, tying her up. “Go away fast. I will keep her here for you.” Her dad left in a hurry. The witch doctor kept rounding her up, chasing her into every corner so that she wouln’t get away. When the night arrived unseen roosters crowed. She sobbed all night. The witch doctor noticed that she was pretty. “I will give her a massage, yay!” He thought and laughed in silence. It was about midnight when the witch doctor came to her and told her to get naked, that he was giving her the first treatment. She didn’t want to and cried louder. Then the witch doctor forcefully grabbed her putting his hands over her mouth, and threw her on the bed. “Dad, daddy!” But her only answer was the wheels of the nocturnal ox carts hitting the potholes in the distant road. * * * Tules returned to fetch her on Monday. Maria came to him moaning. The witch doctor was not there.
105 “Did he operate on you?” “Yes, Pa.” “Did it hurt?” “Yes, Pa.” “But this ain’t coming down…” “He said it will go down little by little.” When the witch doctor arrived, Tules asked him about the operation. “It’s going well,” he said. “You just need to wait a few months. Her hump will go down a little at a time.” When Tules was ready to take her home, the witch doctor told him that to be safe it would be better if he left her a little longer but Tules did not agree to that. He missed Skinny at the shack. As Tules waited by the cattle gate the witch doctor was giving the girl his last treatment. Six months later a weird thing began happening to Skinny Maria The hump was moving down to her belly. It was growing day by day in a scandalous way, but it didn’t seem that the one on her back was getting smaller at all.
