The answers to this question could fill an entire book on their
own. In fact, there are already several books on the topic from
sources inside the military, plus SWAT and law enforcement
from around the country.
Let’s address the question of targets with one word: REALISM.
If we want to provide the best training possible, then we have
to provide the most realistic targets possible.
We should begin this process by moving away from basic paper
picture targets. Your training experience will be far more
effective with realistic targets that have actual shape and size.
If possible, use life-sized three-dimensional targets that can be
presented at full height.
The next issue to consider is reaction. Whenever possible, the
targets should react in some way to accurately placed shots.
Here is where the lines of technology and realism start to get a
bit fuzzy. Reactive targets usually require some type of
mechanical device to provide the motion. These devices need
to be simple and must not require a full time crew just to keep
them running. You will have to use hit sensors of some sort,
and they work reasonably well. However, they can be shot just
like anything else so the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle
is always best; it helps keep costs down too.
