It is important to understand that a fully functional
instrumentation suite is much more than just a
collection of cameras and recorders. It is a
comprehensive system that integrates every facet
of the training event into a single multi-media
product. A proper system will help to simulate a
realistic environment that may include lighting,
special effects, and other environmental controls
like the sounds and smells of a battlefield. While
such a system does not have to cost millions of
dollars, it is certainly more involved than just
buying a home security system and dropping it
into your shoothouse.
Let’s not forget that although an instrumentation
system can do many things, it cannot provide a
trainee with instant feedback or correction on
the fly. This kind of spur-of-the-moment interaction
can only be provided by the trainer. Traditionally,
the trainer follows close behind on the belt loop
of his trainee. However, personal audio links that
can patch the trainer into the integrated sound
system now let him guide the trainee and offer
direction from the safety of an overhead catwalk.
A typical AAR session can take place minutes or
even hours after the actual training event. In some
cases, the information is reviewed again several
days later. The U.S. Army Combat Training
Centers provide “take home AAR packages,”
and the Action Target AAR instrumentation
system supports these package requirements
at the home station. Most trainers agree that
trainees learn more quickly and more effectively
when they receive immediate feedback to their
performance. Delaying correction is like scolding
a dog for making a mess on the carpet the day
after it happens. We are certainly not dogs, nor
are we incapable of reasoning a problem u
