LMG (Light machinegun). A machinegun issued at squad level which may be magazine-fed.<br />

Luftwaffe. <strong>The</strong> German air force, which is part of the Wehrmacht.<br />

MG (Machinegun or Maschinengewehr). A fully-automatic weapon firing rifle-caliber or larger<br />

ammunition from cloth or metal belts or a detachable magazine, generally used by and in support of<br />

the infantry.<br />

MMG (Medium Machinegun). A machinegun issued at the platoon or company level or mounted<br />

on vehicles which is belt-fed and may be air or water-cooled.<br />

MRL (Multiple Rocket Launcher). A type of artillery which uses rockets fired from a multi-barreled<br />

launcher. This includes the German Nebelwerfer and the American Calliope.<br />

MV (Muzzle Velocity). <strong>The</strong> velocity at which a round leaves the barrel of a gun, usually expressed<br />

in meters per second.<br />

NbW (Nebelwerfer). German designation for a rocket launcher, originally intended to lay<br />

smoke screens.<br />

OKH (Oberkommando des Heeres). Army High Command.<br />

OKW (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht). Wehr<br />

PaK (Panzerabwehrkanone). German designation for an antitank gun.<br />

Pi (Pionier). German designation for engineers.<br />

PzG (Panzergrenadier). German designation for armored or mechanized infantry.<br />

PLT (Platoon). A unit made up of 3-5 squads.<br />

PSW (Panzerspähwagen). German designation for a wheeled armored car.<br />

PzB (Panzerbüsche). German designation for an antitank rifle.<br />

PzGr (Panzergranate). German designation for an AP shell for a tank or antitank gun.<br />

PzKpfw (Panzerkampfwagen). German designation for a tank, usually shortened to “Panzer.”<br />

Rear. A machinegun mounted on the rear of a vehicle may be used to fire at ground targets which<br />

are located behind the vehicle only.<br />

Redline. <strong>The</strong> maximum number of revolutions per minute that the engine is designed to withstand.<br />

It is possible to blow the engine up by overheating it (running constantly at or over redline).<br />

RGT (Regiment). A unit made up of 2-4 battalions, often replacing the brigade entirely in division<br />

structure (the same in German and English). Numbering for regiments is as for divisions.<br />

RR (Recoilless Rifle). A type of cannon which has no recoil, but a very large backblast. This allows<br />

it to be mounted on a tripod or light vehicle for use.<br />

s (Schwere). German designation for “heavy.”<br />

SdKfz (Sonderkraftfahrzeug). German for special purpose vehicle. Nearly all vehicles in German<br />

service had an SdKfz number.<br />

Slope. <strong>The</strong> maximum angle of terrain that a vehicle is capable of ascending. This angle may be<br />

reduced by mud or frozen ground.<br />

SMG (Submachinegun). A fully-automatic weapon firing pistol-caliber ammunition from a<br />

detachable box magazine.
