<strong>The</strong> M38 1/4 ton truck, General Purpose, was commonly called the Jeep, due to its initials G.P. It was designed<br />

shortly before the war began, and served well past its conclusion. <strong>The</strong> Jeep was known for its ruggedness and<br />

reliability. Its cross-country handling was also good, due to its use of four-wheel drive, although it was prone<br />

to tipping over on sharp corners at high speeds.<br />

team. <strong>The</strong> soldiers were armed primarily with the M1 Garand semiautomatic rifle, a .30 caliber rifle with an<br />

8-round internal magazine fed through the top by stripper clips. <strong>The</strong> squad leader usually carried a Browning<br />

M3 .45 caliber submachinegun and spare 30-round magazines. All of the soldiers carried the Mark II<br />

“pineapple” hand grenades, and one soldier in each squad usually carried a rifle grenade adapter and several<br />

rifle grenades.<br />

cartridge than the M1 Garand) with a 15 or 30-round detachable box magazine. <strong>The</strong> squad leader usually<br />

carried a Thompson M1A1 .45 caliber submachinegun and spare 20-round magazines. All of the soldiers<br />

carried the Mark II “pineapple” hand grenades.<br />
