Odessa with a baby and two parents who wouldn’t speak to
me.”
“Your parents wouldn’t speak to you?” How did I miss
out on that little tidbit of info?
Again, Mom shoots me an annoyed look. Which, again,
“Martha decided she wanted to be someone else,” Mom
says, “so she became someone else.”
“So?”
“You can’t just decide to be someone else!”
“Why not?”
out her chin. “What kind of sister turns her back on the one
person who needs her most?”
“Me?” I ask.
“No! Me.”
I roll my eyes. “You didn’t expect your sister to live with
you forever, did you, Mom?”
My mother’s arched eyebrow seems to ask, Whose side
are you on? She says, “Of course not.” Then she adds, “She
did say she’d stick around. At least live nearby. But she left.”
Aunt Marty living in Delaware? That, I could not wrap
Tucking her chin into her chest, my mother mumbles
something else.
“Come again?” I say.
