out her chin. “What kind of sister turns her back on the one
person who needs her most?”
“Me?” I ask.

I roll my eyes. “You didn’t expect your sister to live with
you forever, did you, Mom?”
My mother’s arched eyebrow seems to ask, Whose side
are you on? She says, “Of course not.” Then she adds, “She
did say she’d stick around. At least live nearby. But she left.”

my mind around. It threw the planets out of alignment. It
