“boyfriend” felt absolutely wrong. We just had a b.f.–g.f.<br />

kind of kiss and, as much as I wished, hoped, truly, honestly,<br />

and sincerely wanted it not to be true, my heart stopped<br />

thwanging. Instead, it told me that Perry Gould would<br />

always be one of my very best friends.<br />

How am I going to let him in on the news?<br />

“Perry, I—” I try to swallow, but my mouth has gone<br />

dry.<br />

“White dwarf,” he says.<br />

“Huh?”<br />

“Is a white dwarf star brighter or dimmer than the sun?”<br />

He pulls his iQuest out of the huge pocket in his huge<br />

pants.<br />

“Perry—”<br />

“You don’t know?”<br />

I stare blankly. “Dimmer?”<br />

“Exactly. White dwarfs are about one thousand times<br />

less bright than the sun. Supergiants, the biggest stars in the<br />

known universe, can be a million times brighter than the<br />

sun.”<br />

I just look at him. He looks back at me. We have a<br />

moment. But in this moment, without a word, everything<br />

that needs to be said is said. Who says words are the only way<br />

to communicate? Perry’s eyes let me know that everything is<br />

okay. He knows what I know—our kiss was a blip on the<br />

radar. An unidentified flying object. Nothing more than<br />
