I do it at home with a dial-up modem. Mom would catch
me for sure.
I log on and click until I enter the site I need. Holding
my breath, I move the cursor onto the link for the fees and
schedules. “Please, God,” I whisper, “don’t let it be too
expensive.”
“Expensive?” Walter shoves his glasses up the bridge of
his nose. “What price are you putting on a radioactive holocaust?”
Moving my mouse to the PRINT icon, I left click on it.
Walter is still staring at me as I get up and walk around the
corner to the printer. In a few seconds, it spits out exactly
what I need. Adrenaline gushes through my system. It’s not
going to be easy, but it’s definitely doable.
Grabbing the piece of paper, I dash for the door, hoping
to make it to the cafeteria before the good food is gone.
“Hey, Ruthie!” Walter shouts after me. “Will I see you
on the bus?”
Perry waves at me from across the quad. Instantly, I slow
down. I walk sensuously. Feeling my delicious-secret underpants,
I act fearless even though I feel terrified.
“Hurry up,” Perry yells, rolling his eyes.
Inching into Perry’s personal space, I force myself to
gaze seductively into his eyes. My heart pounds, my eyes
water, but no way am I going to blink.
It’s now or never.
