Celeste’s mom dashes up to the booth.<br />
“Sorry I’m late,” she says, breathless. “Oh hi, Ruthie!”<br />
Mrs. Serrano kisses my cheek. Then she hugs her<br />
daughter and Frankie. Celeste’s mom is as different from my<br />
mom as two mothers can be. Celeste and her mom are<br />
friends. When Celeste turned fourteen, her mother took her<br />
to the gynecologist to discuss birth control. On my fourteenth<br />
birthday, Mom asked me if I wanted to rent The<br />
Little Mermaid again.<br />
“This is my aunt Marty,” I say.<br />
Mrs. Serrano puts her shopping bags on the floor and<br />
takes Aunt Marty’s hand. “I feel like I know you. Celeste has<br />
talked about you nonstop since you came to town.”<br />

Without missing a beat, Aunt Marty kisses Mrs. Serrano<br />
on both cheeks and replies, “Ruthie told me all about your<br />
lovely Celeste.”<br />

“I’d like to take the girls out to dinner,” Aunt Marty<br />
says. “Would that be all right with you?”<br />
“Of course!”<br />
“I promise to have Celeste home by, say, nine?”<br />
“<strong>Perfect</strong>.”<br />
Nine? Mom will be slumped over from a heart attack by<br />
then.<br />
While Frankie calls her mom for permission, Celeste<br />
