of the church through a special rite of commissioning and blessing. Here at St. Paul the Apostle the following
catechists and teachers will be commissioned to share the faith with the adults, families, youth and children of
the Parish and school this year.

The Suffering Messiah
Twenty-fourth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
September 16, 2012
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks this question to the people, who do you say I am? Among the responses
He received were John the Baptizer, Elijah, or one of the Prophets. After receiving these
answers, Christ asked the disciples (apostles) themselves who they thought Christ to be. St. Peter
answered directly, "You are the Messiah," the anointed one of God. Christ turns to Peter and says,
"Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my
Father who is in Heaven.
Our Lord reveals that Peter's knowledge of our Lord was directly given him by God the Father in
Heaven.
In Mark's Gospel the story concerning St. Peter is shown that according to tradition, St. Peter
and St. Mark were close friends.
Then Christ teaches them that the Messiah was to be a suffering Messiah. He had to suffer and
die at the hands of evil men. He was not the Messiah of glory like Caesar but the humble, and I
emphasize, the humble Servant.
To the average Jew the idea was that the Messiah was to be like Solomon or David with a great
earthly kingdom. The Apostles who, of course, were Jewish were stunned at the thought that the
Messiah had to suffer and die. Peter drew our Lord aside and began to scold Him for the idea of
suffering. But Our Lord reprimanded him, "Get out of sight Satan, you are not judging by God's
standards but by human standards." By Satan (Devil) Christ meant Satan who was suggesting to
St. Peter that Christ could not suffer. Peter admitted that Jesus was the Messiah and Devine but
rejected the idea of suffering, which most humans also reject.
This dialogue with Christ showed that St. Peter was to be the natural spokesman and leader of
the twelve apostles, and Pope (Supreme Pastor) head of the Church founded by Christ. Then Our
Lord told the Apostles a truth for them and for all of us. "If a person wishes to come after me, he
must deny his very self, and take up his cross and follow in my steps.
St. James in his Epistle tells us that carrying our cross with faith shows our true love of
Christ. Living the corporal works of mercy with faith. The corporal Works of Mercy are:
l) To feed the hungry, 2) to clothe the naked, 3) to give drink to the thirsty, 4) to visit the sick,
5) to visit those in need, 6) to give shelter to the homeless, and 7) and to bury the dead. This
shows we are living in sanctifying grace. For a faith that is living in love is the essence of the Gospel.
St. James in his epistle makes it clear we are not justified by faith alone, we are justified by
faith and works of love (James 2, Verse 24).
We all have crosses and sufferings but if we unite them with Our Lord, (1 Colossians, Verse 4)
great graces will follow from the Holy Spirit!

There will be a young adult ministry group coming
here to St. Paul’s called
Spirit and Truth!
The group will include a speaker,
Eucharistic Adoration,
worship music, food and fellowship!
The group will meet
every Thursday night from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
The group will start in the Convent Basement–
north door (Youth Ministry Center) at 7:00 followed
by Adoration and Discussion in the
Church
(using north middle door).
ALL young adults between the ages of 18 and
39 are welcome, single or married.
It is a great opportunity to meet new people and
grow in faith!

The Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart

Catholic Ministries Appeal is in the mail to all parishioners

Appeal provides critical funding to diocesan ministries
that serve individuals and parishes throughout
the Diocese of Joliet. It also provides refunds
of 50% of the cash received (not pledged) over
the parish goal to each parish. If you receive this
mailing, please respond generously. You will be
helping both our diocese and our parish.
