<strong>Weather</strong> <strong>By</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Moon</strong><br />

the night of the <strong>Moon</strong> Festival, the rebels successfully attacked<br />

and overthrew the government. What followed was<br />

the establishment of the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644).<br />

Today, round <strong>Moon</strong> cakes, as a reminder of family unity.<br />

are eaten to commemorate this event.<br />

In agrarian Chinese society, festivals marked the passage<br />

of time. Lifestyles may have changed in modern Taiwan,<br />

but the traditional festivals carried forth from ancient<br />

Chinese society remain an important part of family life.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many legends that claim to be the origin of the<br />

festival for celebrating the radiant moon.<br />

One of the most popular is the story of Hou Yih, an<br />

office and bodyguard of an emperor in the Hsia Dynasty<br />

(2205-1818 B.C.), and his beautiful wife, Chang-O. As the<br />

legend goes, Chang-O stole from her husband an elixir said<br />

to ensure youth and immortality. Upon swallowing the drug,<br />

she soared to the <strong>Moon</strong>, where her youth and beauty were<br />

preserved. As punishment for the theft, however, Chang-0<br />

was doomed to stay in the firmament forever.<br />

Among the most ancient of monuments are the remains<br />

of giant stone structures erected by Neolithic man<br />

in France and other regions throughout the world. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

are about 900 megalithic circles concentrated in the British<br />

Isles alone. <strong>The</strong>se, believed to be of Celtic origin, range<br />

in height from about 1m to 22 m. <strong>The</strong>re are single standing<br />

stones or monoliths, stone circles (consisting of many<br />

monoliths) and perfectly aligned rows of monoliths.<br />
