Barometric pressure can rise steadily whilst an anticyclone<br />

is developing, and fall during receding.<br />

Example 1. Heat wave, record summer high temperatures, 3 days<br />

after New <strong>Moon</strong>, 7th Feb. 1973<br />

CYCLONES<br />

Clockwise rotation of winds in the southern hemisphere,<br />

anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere, are associated<br />

with cyclones or storms at upper levels, and will<br />

tend to coincide with troughs or gaps between the anticyclones.<br />

Cyclones and depressions tend to drift east or<br />

southeast in the Southern Hemisphere and east or northeast<br />

in the Northern Hemisphere.<br />

A tropical cyclone is a low pressure circulation in<br />

tropical latitudes, having wind speeds more than Beaufort<br />

8, but less than 12(hurricane). A hurricane or typhoon is<br />
