<strong>Predicting</strong><br />

Ants hurry to and fro carrying their eggs. <strong>The</strong>y run in circles,<br />

when rain is about and in straight lines when it is fine.<br />

Seabirds fly into interior.<br />

Aquatic birds leave inland lakes.<br />

Swamp birds nest further up valleys, to coincide with<br />

expected water levels when eggs hatch..<br />

Cattle enter stalls late.<br />

Roe deer and other game seem to lose their shyness and<br />

leave the woods.<br />

Fish jump from water.<br />

Earthworms come out of holes.<br />

2. OF BETTER WEATHER<br />

(animals seem industrious)<br />

Swallows fly high in search of insects.<br />

Spiders spin webs. Seaweed stiffens.<br />

Bush birds stay longer in bush in summer, winter still far<br />

off.<br />

Early-spring arrival of swallow and cuckoo(Europe)<br />

Dolphins splashing in a billowy sea.<br />

Cranes flying high in silence.<br />

3. OF WEATHER CHANGE<br />

(Animals seem annoyed)<br />

Owl or morepork screeching.<br />

Sheep skip and sport.<br />

Oxen sniff the air or paw the ground.<br />

Many birds have special rain or weather calls.<br />

4. OF EARTHQUAKES<br />

(Animals seem to panic and want to get out into the open)<br />
