Community Profile 

The Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce is 

proud to present its 2013 Community Profile and Membership 

Directory. Our community is comprised of two 

cities, Waynesville and St. Robert, and the surrounding 

rural areas. The combined estimated population of the 

cities was approximately 9,000 at the end of 2011; Fort 

Leonard Wood which is contiguous to the Cities has a 

day time population of approximately 40,000. Fort Leonard 

Wood is a Department of Defense installation and is 

the home of the Engineer, Military Police, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, 

and Nuclear schools and provides training for all branches of the Armed 

Services. We are truly blessed to have the best of both worlds--a rural lifestyle 

with the benefits of larger cities. 

Waynesville and St. Robert are bisected by Interstate 44, which provides access 

to Fort Leonard Wood and the Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport. 

Commercial air travel is available with daily flights. The airport is also expanding 

to provide sixteen hangars for private and corporate aircraft. 

Our community enjoys the benefit of one of the finest school systems in the 

state. The Waynesville R-VI school system operates six elementary schools 

(one in St. Robert, one in Waynesville and four on Fort Leonard Wood), one 

middle school, one sixth grade center, and one high school, plus a career 

center. The area also has a multitude of higher and continuing education opportunities. 

While many cities have seen a reduction in growth, our community had steady 

residential and commercial growth over the last two years. Our area also 

enjoys a steady increase in sales tax revenue. Commercial growth continues 

to be strong with new developments and businesses. Our area businesses include 

several national franchises, but our true treasures are the family-owned 

businesses that provide personal service and great products at a great value.

Nestled in the picturesque

at the forefront of this effort. 

Established in 1833 and 

named for Revolutionary War hero 

“Mad Anthony” Wayne, Waynesville 

proudly displays its rich history while 

embracing the future. A tour of the 

Waynesville town square reveals a 

charming community where local 

businesses reside beside historic 

establishments. The Pulaski County 

Courthouse sits beside the Old 

Courthouse Museum, which dates 

back to the early 1900s. The original 

courthouse has been restored and is 

home to the Pulaski County Historical 

Society. 

Across the square, the Old 

Stagecoach Stop has been a local 

landmark for over a century. Since 

its origins in the early 1800’s, the 

establishment has served as a post 

office, stagecoach stop, Civil War

aynesville is a family oriented 

community and recent 

improvements prom- 

ise to bring additional business. 

Perhaps most noteworthy is the 

extension of Highway 

H, which provides 

convenient access to 

Fort Leonard Wood 

from Waynesville. 

The extension 

not only alleviates 

traffic in St. Robert 

but will also promote 

new business in 

Waynesville by 

affording easier 

access and traffic flow 

through Waynesville 

and opening new 

markets for real estate. 

One major local 

interest already 

located along Highway H is the Missouri 

State Veterans’ Cemetery. Within the 

cemetery is the Veterans’ Memorial 

dedicated by the community to honor 

veterans. 

Recently, Waynesville renewed 

its commitment to historic preservation 

and economic development. In 

May 2005, the town applied for the 

Downtown Revitalization Grant to 

supplement local business 

contributions, which has enhanced 

the downtown area with beautification 

projects that include sidewalk 

replacement, landscaping, the addition 

of vintage lighting, and a town clock. 

In 2010 the City of Waynesville was 

honored with the state designation as 

a DREAM community which focuses 

on downtown revitalization. 

Also increasing the attractiveness 

of Waynesville to new business is the 

Waynesville - St. Robert Regional 

Airport at Forney Airfield located on 

Fort Leonard Wood. The airfield is run 

by the City of Waynesville and City of 

St. Robert, and has increased its flight 

traffic to offer more convenient commuter 

access to larger metropolitan 

airports including daily flights to St. 

Veterans Memorial

Louis. The airfield also serves Fort 

Leonard Wood. 

Waynesville’s picturesque 

Laughlin and Roubidoux Parks have 

been enhanced by the fitness / walking 

trail that spans both 

parks. The trail 

follows the Roubidoux 

River, under Roubidoux 

Bridge, and into 

Laughlin Park. The 

park is also home to 

picnic pavilions, ball 

fields, and a splash 

park that is open to 

the public throughout 

the summer months. 

Next to 

Waynesville, relatively 

young St. Robert is 

also encountering 

rapid growth. 

St. Robert was 

formed in 1951 and is the business 

and economic hub for Pulaski 

County. To accommodate such rapid 

growth, St. Robert is now home to 

more than 350 businesses consisting 

of both national franchises and locally 

owned businesses. Additionally, the 

city’s growing tourism industry resulted 

in approximately 1,700 hotel rooms. 

The sound financial condition 

of St. Robert caused many improvements 

in infrastructure and in the 

quality of life for residents. Once a 

convenience community that rose to 

support Fort Leonard Wood, the area 

has since tripled in size and solidified 

its own identity with the completion 

of several city projects. St. Robert 

expanded and upgraded Missouri 

Avenue, which is the main road 

through the heart of town, as well as 

the primary entrance to Fort Leonard 

Wood. The renovation increased the 

road width from two lanes per 

direction to three lanes and also added 

two outer roads. The reconstruction 

included landscaping and the addition 

of improved traffic signals and resulted 

in more efficient traffic flow and easier 

access to surrounding businesses.

park, complete with picnic and 

playground areas, a softball 

field and a community center. The 

Community Center is used extensively 

by families and various organizations

craft and antique shows. Additional 

plans are in place to provide more 

recreational opportunities and 

community support for residents. 

St. Robert also maintains a 

network of walking trails, which were 

financed through state and federal 

grants. The walking trail system 

remains a work in 

progress, and when 

complete, the city will 

have reached the goal 

of making St. Robert 

a truly walkable 

community. A recent 

development is the 

newly opened aquatics 

center and the St. 

Robert Municipal Golf 

Course. 

Future plans 

for St. Robert include 

the construction of 

additional commercial 

and residential devel- 

opments. In 2002, the 

city purchased a 4.5 

acre site and created a green space to 

be used as a recreational area. The 

development, recommendation and 

implementation of policies, programs 

and procedures that accomplish the

city’s goals and objectives to ensure 

the continued economic health and 

vitality of the city is a priority. 

As a tribute to members of the 

armed forces, two M-60 tanks, one an 

Army tank and the other a Marine tank, 

were decommissioned from 

active service and installed 

in two lit and landscaped 

parks within St. Robert. Two 

additional parks are in the 

city, one on St. Robert 

Boulevard across from the 

Wal-Mart Super Center 

and at a second site across 

Interstate 44 on Historic 

Route 66. 

St. Robert serves 

as the main gateway to Fort 

Leonard Wood and maintains a strong 

bond with the neighboring community. 

Fort Leonard Wood is an Army 

installation that dates back to World 

War II, and is home of the Army’s 

Maneuver Support Center of 

Excellence as well as a state of the art 

training facility for the Army Engineer 

School, Military Police School and 

Chemical, Biological, 

Radiological, and 

Nuclear School.

As early explorers and 

pioneers migrated west the state of 

Missouri was formed and divided 

into a number of counties. Originally 

inhabited by the Osage Indians, 

settlers soon arrived, attracted by 

the wooded forests and intriguing 

landscape of rolling hills, valleys, 

and caves. 

Pulaski County was 

recognized in 1833 by the State 

Legislature in honor of Count 

Pulaski, a Polish Patriot. In 1838, 

the Cherokee Indians traveled 

across the area on their “Trail 

of Tears” to Oklahoma. The 

area witnessed the era of the 

stagecoach, the Civil War, the rise 

of the railroad, and the development of 

Route 66. 

Waynesville is the oldest town 

in Pulaski County, established in 1843 

primarily by pioneers arriving from the 

South. Waynesville derived its name 

from the famous Revolutionary War 

hero “Mad Anthony” Wayne. The town 

originated as a trading post for fur 

traders and trappers and eventually 

became an agricultural community. 

Most local residents were farmers, but 

many supplemented their income by 

cutting trees to make railroad ties for 

the local railroad. 

As America’s boundaries 

shifted west, Waynesville became 

an important stagecoach stop for 

pioneers. The pre-Civil War Old 

Stagecoach Stop still stands on the 

east side of the courthouse square in 

downtown Waynesville. It is the oldest 

building in Pulaski County and is listed 

on the National Register of Historic 

Places. The Old Stagecoach Stop 

served as a hotel, tavern and a post 

office for travelers on the St. Louis to 

Springfield Road. 

Waynesville was designated 

as the county seat. The first sessions 

of court were in private homes. The 

first log courthouse in Pulaski County 

History 

was built in 1837 on the south side of 

the square. Three years later in 1840 

it was replaced by a brick building that 

was badly burned in the Civil War. 

The fourth Pulaski County Courthouse was built in 1903 for 

$10,200. It is used as a museum today and stands next to 

the Pulaski County Courthouse in Waynesville.

A third brick building was built and 

burned in 1903. It was replaced by the 

Old Courthouse, which today houses 

a museum featuring Pulaski County 

artifacts, including blacksmith and 

carpentry tools, quilts, school 

materials and Civil War era items. The 

current $4.4 million, 50,000 square foot 

Pulaski County Courthouse opened 

in January of 1990. It is listed on the 

National Register of Historic Places. 

The Civil War had a dramatic 

affect on Waynesville. The area was 

predominantly Southern territory at the 

start of the war, but many residents 

avoided joining the battle. Its location 

on the Old Wire Road placed 

Waynesville in the middle of the supply 

route on which the Union Army moved 

men and supplies. 

The arrival of the Union Army 

and its establishment of a fort on the 

bluff overlooking the Roubidoux Spring 

forced locals to pick their allegiances. 

The once peaceful agricultural 

community soon found themselves 

at odds with neighbors and family 

members. The Union fort’s mission 

was to protect the Old Wire Road. A 

historical marker on Fort Street is all 

that remains.

A 

s the Civil War escalated in 

Missouri, many Waynesville 

residents left. Men joined 

either the Union Army or 

Confederate militias or guerilla 

groups; women and 

children moved to safer 

territory in Illinois. Farms, 

homes, and businesses 

were looted and destroyed 

or burned. Many residents 

never returned; those that 

did, found their homes 

destroyed, overgrown, and 

livestock lost. 

The Old Stagecoach 

Stop was turned into 

a hospital to treat wounded 

soldiers. Since its 

construction, the structure 

has stood as a silent 

witness of the eras of Pulaski County 

history. It survived through the 

settlement, Civil War, reconstruction, 

the traffic on Route 66 and World 

War II. Always evolving with the 

times, the Stagecoach Stop was also 

used at varying points in history as a 

hospital, dentist’s office, and now 

contains a room with excavation 

artifacts, a display of WWII 

memorabilia and the Museum Shop. 

Stagecoaches soon made 

way for railroads, and by 1926, 

automobiles became a popular 

method of travel. The U.S. government 

commissioned a 2,400 mile 

road that would travel from Chicago, 

Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, 

the road would span 10 counties 

and 300 miles in Missouri and would 

travel through the heart of Waynesville. 

The construction of the U.S. Route 

66 through Waynesville opened up 

an economy outside of agriculture for 

the area. 

Originally a gravel state road, 

Route 66 follows an ancient ridge 

that was trod by migrating game and 

traveled by Indians in search of 

food. Before the Civil War, white settlers 

knew the route as the St. Louis

to Springfield Road. It became a 

communication corridor during the 

Civil War. 

Eventually business enterprises, 

such as motels, restaurants,

is probably the most prominent historic location in Pulaski 

County 

a hillbilly store, and Ozark basket 

sellers settled along the road. They 

served as catalysts for the area’s 

growth. Modern day travelers of

Leonard Wood during World War II 

launched the county’s last 50 years of

1940, the post served as an infantry 

division training area for World War II 

soldiers. 

Fort Leonard Wood quickly 

took on an engineer training 

mission until the end of World War II 

in 1945. During the Korean War Fort

deactivated, but the military demands 

of the Cold War and aggressive

Big Piney River 

Wood have a lot to offer. St. Robert 

and Waynesville both have rich 

histories featuring Historic Route 66, 

The Trail of Tears and the Civil War. 

There are 33 original miles 

of Route 66 in Pulaski County. The 

stretch is lush with brilliant scenery 

and breathtaking landscapes with

valleys cut through limestone and 

dolomite rock. This route holds 

particular appeal for modern day 

travelers as they wind along the 

historic road. Still visible along the 

Pulaski County Visitor Center 

route is the historic Hooker Church 

and Graveyard, which dates back to 

the early 1900’s. Travelers through 

Hooker Cut take in the popular 

postcard landscape that was once 

rumored to be the deepest road cut in 

America and see the layers of limestone 

that had to be overcome to build 

the road. The Tourism Bureau offers 

a self-guided driving tour of Historic 

Route 66 available at the Visitor 

Center or as an audio download from 

the tourism website.

The Old Stagecoach Stop that 

has stood since the 1850’s. 

The building has served 

as a stagecoach stop, post 

office and Civil War Hospital. 

Adjacent to The Old Stagecoach 

Stop is the Old Pulaski 

Courthouse Museum, one of 

only two courthouses located 

on Route 66 in Missouri. Both 

buildings are listed on the 

National Register of Historic 

Places.

The John B. Mahaffey Museum 

Complex, named after the Civilian to 

the Secretary of the Army, houses the 

rich history and contributions of the 

Military Police, Army Engineers and 

Fort Leonard Wood Piney Valley Golf Course 

Chemical, Biological, Radiological, 

and Nuclear units during the conflicts 

dating from the Revolutionary War 

to present conflicts. The museum 

complex is also adjacent to the WWII

are free and open to the public. Miller 

Cave, open to the public, is located on

the Piney Valley Golf Course, Stone 

Mill Spring trout fishing area and 

various areas for fishing, canoeing, 

hiking, camping and picnicking are 

also located on post. 

The pristine waterways of 

the Gasconade and Big Piney rivers 

entice visitors to swim, float, fish and 

camp. The largest river in 

Pulaski County is the 

Gasconade, with nearly 30 

miles of prime water species 

to test the limits of your tackle. 

An area of Big Piney has been 

designated a small-mouth bass 

trophy area. The two rivers 

wind their way through a variety 

of geographical formations, 

ranging from low-lying river 

bottom farms to towering bluffs 

cut from limestone deposited 

millions of years ago.

The Chamber of Commerce hosts many community and fundraising events throughout 

the year. We are always looking for new and fun ways to raise funding for our activities. 

The Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-off will warm you up 

on a cold winter’s day. Businesses, Organizations 

and Individuals can enter their teams to compete for 

the Best Chili in Pulaski County. 

The Chamber hands out free hot dogs and soda 

at Community Pride Night prior to the start of the 

Waynesville Tigers Homecoming football game. 

Operation Workforce Job Fair is held annually

Waynesville-St. Robert and surrounding areas.

provide samplings from their menus to be enjoyed by

During Frogtober Fest the Chamber holds a Frog 

Race. The frogs jockey for position as they race 

down the Roubidoux all striving to win the big prize. 

The Veterans’ Day Ceremony and Parade is held 

every year in Waynesville or St. Robert to honor
