Comments: My great-great grandmother was either born in Canada or in Minnesota around
1846?. I do not know her maiden name. I suspect she was a Mdewakanton Dakota Sioux though I
am unsure of this. I believe she was married to a mixed blood Native American born in Canada
around 1840 - Louis LeClaire. He shows up on the Mendota, MN census when he was 19 years old
with his family. There were a number of LeClaire men living in Mendota, MN within a ten year
period with young wives and children. These young men were approximately the same age so I
suspect they were brothers or related in some way. Harriet LeCaire's daughter, Lily LeClaire, my
great-grandmother, was born in 1876 in Mendota, MN and married an Irish immigrant, John
Devine. They continued to live in Mendota, MN. Her daughter, Lillian Devine, my grandmother,
was born in Mendota, MN in 1899. She lived in Mendota, MN on and off throughout life. Many of
the people in Mendota, MN were of mixed blood heritage. It is a smaller "village". As a young
child I was told that I was not of Native Americn heritage yet most of my cousins were Native
American on my mother's side. My grandmother told me that she knew she was not of Indian
heritage. Two years ago I met a cousin after many years and he asked me if I was aware that I was
of Native heritage. I told him I didn't know but had always suspected. My cousin told me my son
looked more like the LeClaire boys, those of mixed blood, than they did themselves. (My son was
born in Minnesota and looks like a minority in a sea of nordic people :-) After speaking with my
cousin, I began to research my Mendota family. I found that they disappeared from the Mendota
census about the time of the 1862 Sioux uprising in Minnesota. Later some, but not all,
reappeared. I did not know if they were ever on the tribal rolls and would have to do a great deal
more research. I suspected since my family may have lied about being Indian that they would
never show up on any tribal roll. I decided to take the quick route to find if I was of Native
American heritage by doing a genealogical test. With all of this said, I am not surprised to find
that I am of Native American heritage. It makes sense to me. It's like a piece of a puzzle has been
found. Truthfully it is a little weird to be told you aren't of native heritage when all your relatives
are native at least on one side... My mother is still alive and so happy to know this information. My
mother told me that until the day of her death, my great-grandmother wore her hair in a long
braid and appeared in every way physically to be a Native American. I am happy to know this
information. I told my son who was very happy to know. At least he has some idea of why he
might look like the minority in a sea of nordics. I do believe my son looks like my Mendota
relatives - moreso than me. It's really great that we can now trace our roots in this manner. I was
always told I was Swedish but you should see me. It's kind of funny :) Take care and I hope this
might help someone.
