TRANSLATION HIGHLIGHTS
“It” has been graciously given by the sovereignty of God to His elect on behalf of Christ. What is
this “it” that Paul is referring to? “It” is explained by two articular infinitives, one referring to saving
faith and the other to suffering for blessing. The exercise of the first at a point in time (regeneration)
results in our eternal salvation. The exercise of the second on repeated intervals results in our
suffering for blessing and spiritual growth. The Passive Voice points to the sovereignty of God in
giving these to us. We did not ask for it; we did not want it. Saving faith is given to us by God
