It is said a Qurlanic verse was revealed regarding this:<br />

110 ye who believel When there come to you believing women .<br />

refugees, examine and test them. God knows best as to their<br />

faith. " 1<br />

Consequently, the -Prophet persuaded her brothers, that women<br />

immigrants who have entered the faith and embraced Islam shall not<br />

be returned to their people, as the male immigrants are. This incident<br />

shows how Islam and the Prophet protect women.<br />

"Umm Kultt7um was at this<br />

point single, but she settled in al-Madinah and maried Zayed ibn<br />

Harithah by whom she had a child.,<br />

She was one, <strong>of</strong> the strongest and most intelligent <strong>of</strong> Muslim women<br />

<strong>of</strong> her day. These women were all inspired by the new hope held out<br />

to them by Islam to be treated as equals regardless <strong>of</strong> their social<br />

or economic status. It was largely this hope which lent them the<br />

endurance to resist all efforts to make them revert to paganism,<br />

and it was a validated hope.<br />

The participation <strong>of</strong> women was not confined only to the -II<br />

struggle on behalf <strong>of</strong> the call <strong>of</strong> Islam but extended into most other<br />

fields. ý Muslim women contributed to medicine and nursing during the<br />

early days <strong>of</strong> Islam. One such woman who was a leading figure in the<br />

medical field was Rufaydah alAnýa-riyyah, who was an excellent nurse.<br />

The Prophet commissioned her to care for the sick and tend the wounded. 3<br />

She had a tent set up which was well known to all who needed medical<br />

treatment.<br />

Prophet, women in Islamic society worked as doctors. Far from objecting<br />
