Several fellowships provided financial support for overseas research and time for
writing. Initial funds for the dissertation came from the Fanny Bullock Workman
Traveling Fellowship and the Bryne-Rubel Fellowship, both through Bryn Mawr College.
Additional support for travel to and research in Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey came from
the Danielle Parks Memorial Fellowship from the Cyprus American Archaeological
Research Institute (CAARI), and a Council of American Overseas Research Centers
(CAORC) Multi-Country Research Fellowship. Finally, a Mrs. Giles Whiting
Dissertation Fellowship provided extensive financial assistance for the final stages of
writing.
During the course of my overseas research, I benefitted greatly from time spent at
the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA), both as a regular and
visiting student associate member. The school provided extensive guidance and help for
acquiring permits in Greece; in particular I thank Director Jack Davis, Bob Bridges,
Maria Pilali, and Elena Kourakou. While in Greece, there were a number of individuals
who offered academic advice or logistical aid in studying museum materials. In this
regard, Jack Davis, Sherry Stocker, Tom Brogan, John Camp, Joseph Maran, Ulrich
