Cattleyas Cattleya aclandiae w Lindl., Edwards’s Bot. Reg. 26: t. 48 (1840) Distribution: Brazil. It has one to two flowers, tepals mahogany with darker spots, lip with heavy purple veining. Canes about eight inches (20cm ) tall with two to three leaves. Flowering usually in May. Named for Lady Ackland. Cattleya cernua w (Lindl.) ined. Distribution: Brazil to Argentina. Clusters of small orange-red flowers on short discoid pseudobulbs, it grows well on a cork bark mount. Previously classified as a Sophronitis. 232 • OSGBJ 2010 (59), No. 4 Cattleya aclandiae Cattleya amethystoglossa w Linden & Rchb.f. ex R.Warner, Select Orchid. Pl.: t. 2 (1862) Distribution: Brazil. It has five or more small flowers with pale pink tepals with darker pink spots, lip dark pink. One of the biggest cattleyas with canes 40 inches (one metre) tall. Cattleya acuensis w (Fowlie) Van den Berg, Neodiversity 3: 4 (2008) Distribution: Brazil. It has small red flowers, like C. coccinea but narrower sepals, petals and lip. A small plant, only a few inches tall, it is often grown on a bark slab. Previously classified as a Sophronitis. Cattleya acuensis Cattleya amethystoglossa ‘Eikoh’ Cattleya cernua Cattleya cinnabarina w (Bateman ex Lindl.) Van den Berg, Neodiversity 3: 6 (2008) Distribution: From S. Minas Girais, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tall thin canes with bright orange flowers which have long narrow tepals, and a long recurving orange lip with pink veining. Previously classified as a Sophronitis.
Cattleya coccinea w Lindl., Edwards’s Bot. Reg. 22: t. 1919 (1836) Distribution: Brazil. A beautiful little species, often grown on a bark slab – note the moss which has also grown. It has bright orange flowers; line bred cultivars have the biggest flowers. Golden yellow forms and the striped var. barboleta are much sought after. Previously classified as a Sophronitis.
