MARINE FUNG I ON DRIFTWOOD
FROM TRE WEST COAST OF JUTLAND,
DENMARK
SUMMARY
A survey is presented of marine fungi collected on manufactured
wood found as driftwood on the beach at Grønhøj on the north west
coast af Jutland, Denmark. Commerits are given on 37 marine fungi,
chiefly Ascomycetes.
The environmental surroundings of the driftwood in different
zones of the beach are described, together with the growth conditions
for the fungi afforded by the wood in the different zones.
The location of fruit bodies in relation to the substrate was found
to determine the species spectra in the different zones of the beach.
At the water's edge (zone 1) species with fruiting bodies embedded in
the wood were of dominant occurrence (Remispora stellata, Ceriosporopsi«
halima, Remispora pilleat«, Halosphaeria mediosetigera
and others). At the base of the dunes (zone 3), in addition to the
former species, a group of species with fruit bo dies on the surface
of the wood was found, together with species with fruit bodies on
grains of sand in close association with the wood (Corollospora mariiima,
C. tubulata, C. lacera, C. trijurcata and others). The propagation
of the marine fungi in the latter group is apparently enhanced in
localities in which there is a possibility for a certain degree of move
ment of the driftwood between the beach and the coastal water.
