In some collections globular pycnidia are found, 48-56 p in diameter
, wit h the same colour and wall st r uct ure as the perithecia, but
glabrous; spores 1 X 0.75 p . No connection between the perithecia
and the pycnidia has been found with the exception that they are
found growing together.
This int eresti ng species is un doubt edly a Crinigera sp., the typ e
being C. maritima SCHMIDT (SCHMIDT 1969). Although there are cert
ain taxonomic differences between the Danish species and C. maritima
as deseribed by SCHMIDT, the present author has been reluctant
to give the Danish species a new name for the following reasons: The
main differences between the two fungi are found in the ascus type
and in the slime covering the spores. The asci of C. maritima are
thin-walled, whereas the Danish material bears thick-walled as ci.
However, these thick-walled asci are found only in young material and
since the type material is sparse (SCHMIDT, personal communication),
thick walled asci might well be expected to occur in a more comprehensive
material from the locality concerned. The slime covering
of the spores of C. maritima develops into fine, elongated threads
arranged subterminally in a regular manner (spores from the type
material examined), but this difference in slime covering may possibly
be the result of differences in the salinity of the North Sea (3.1 %)
and the Baltic Sea (1.4 % ).
