Piedmontese, has given an account of an ascent of Kasbek by the<br />

butti-ess opposite the post-station made bv him in 1887. ^I. Ivanoff<br />

has recounted a vain attempt to ascend Elbruz. Two other Russian<br />

travellers, Messrs. Iljin and Dinnik, visited the lower ends of<br />

several glaciers, and published in Petermanns Mitteilungen in-<br />

structive accounts of their travels.' Professor Kovalevsky and<br />

Dr. Radde have studied on the spot the primitive laws and customs<br />

of the mountain tribes.<br />

In 1890 the distinguished botanist, M. S. Sommier, with M. E.<br />

Levier, visited Suanetia, and traversed the Forest of Darl and the<br />

Klukhor Pass. M. Levier has described their adventures and<br />

discoveries in a most entertaining volume, full of valuable botanical<br />

information.<br />
