After several years of thoughtful and painstaking restoration Palazzo Terranova was converted into a private country house hotel with just eight gorgeous bedrooms, each named after operas and composers. The style is an effective mix of Anglo-Italian - original cotto tiles, wooden beams, Umbrian paintwork and marble bathrooms combine with antique furnishings, 16th century paintings and sculptures and fine British linens. The overall effect is one of absolute luxury where old and modern have been cleverly amalgamated into a luxurious Italian idyll. With names such as Trovatore and Bellini, each of the bedrooms enjoys its own style and character. All are extremely spacious and airy with the most gorgeous interiors and fabrics. La Traviata is an exceptional suite painted corn yellow and pale green with super king size four poster bed, adjoining dressing room and bathroom with hand carved marble bath whilst La Biblioteca is painted in medieval manuscript colours of pink and lilac with hand carved stone fireplace, C16th carved walnut bookshelves, filled with historical and classic books and a small walk on balcony in the bathroom with wonderful view of the hills. Different again, and ideal for families, is La Palazzina Villa which is set below the Palazzo amidst lavender and rosemary and is equally elegant and luxurious. Service at Palazzo Terranova is second to none. Nothing is too much for the charming staff at the Palazzo who will tend to guests’ every wish or requirement. Food and wine at Terranova is of prime importance and any gourmet will cherish the original and fine dishes using the very best fresh ingredients that Umbria has to offer. Olive oil is from the estate, wild boar and truffles sourced locally and fine wines carefully selected to complement the changing seasonal menu. A pre dinner aperitivo of delicious Umbrian wine can be enjoyed on a comfy sofa on the lawn in front of the house or, in cooler months, by the open fire in the cosy bar. Not the usual busy trendy venue with noises pervading, instead the Spa here is complete tranquillity in a room at the top of the Palazzo with a masseur who is outstanding and cannot be too highly recommended. For the more energetic the vast heated swimming pool is set above the Palazzo with fully equipped fitness centre and there are wonderful walks and riding to be enjoyed in the surrounding hills not to mention all the historic places of interest nearby should one manage to actually pull oneself away from Terranova.
