RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN The Religious Education Program continuously welcomes children from pre-school through high school. Parents have been entrusted to teach their children to pray and discover their vocation as children of God. Our faith community offers a place of catechesis for children and their families. For registration or information please contact Rose Deffenbaugh at 992-0901 Children’s Liturgy of the Word for ages 3-10 Sunday 9:30 am Mass through Palm Sunday, March 24th. During the liturgy Father will dismiss the children to catechists who present the readings and teachings especially prepared for their understanding. They return to share Mass with their family following the Intercessions. All are welcome. No need to register! We welcome new volunteers! The Catechumens will celebrate the Rites of the Scrutinies on the 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th Sundays of Lent at the 11:30am Mass and the Candidates are preparing for their 1 st Reconciliation. Volunteers needed for all Religious Education Programs Our children are always in need of friendly faces to assist in their journey to discover God’s love. We are especially in need of a committed adult in helping our preschool catechist in the classroom to provide personal attention to the students. Also needed immediately are leaders and assistant (particularly men) for the Youth Group to help in the classroom and also to chaperone field trips, activities, retreats and fundraisers. Volunteers with diverse skills are always needed. We are looking for photographers, food preparers, clerical aides, and assistants for the classroom and sacramental preparation programs. Please consider becoming involved in this highly rewarding ministry. Join us for Totally Tuesday Movie Nights 6:30- 8:00pm in the Youth Ministry Room in the Education Building for enjoyable award-winning movies about faith. Refreshments provided by the Youth Group. Rice School Wednesday Morning Adult Faith Formation March 6- Perpetua and Felicitas, two early Christian Women Martyrs. These women were martyred in AD 20 3 in Carthage, North Africa. We know about them because Perpetua left a moving diary which records her intimate thoughts and feelings as she faced her death for the sake of Jesus. Come meet women who will change your life. (Feast Day: March 7) March 13- The Beatitudes. The teaching of Jesus that appears in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. These ethical teachings are presented as 8 blessings in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. On the other hand, Luke’s Sermon on the Plain presents them as four blessings, followed by four woes that mirror the blessings. In either case, these teachings represent the very pinnacle of Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom. How can we draw from their wisdom and apply their ethic to our lives as Christians? The classes are offered in the Education Building, Room 13-14 at 9am on Wednesdays.
Volunteer Appreciation Mass In an effort to recognize all of the time, talent and treasure that volunteers donate to their Church, in this Year of Faith, Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites ALL VOLUNTEERS throughout the Diocese of Venice to share in the celebration of Mass with him so he may express his appreciation and thanks for service. The Mass for volunteers in Lee and Collier counties will be held Tuesday, March 5 at Our Lady of Light Parish in Estero. All volunteers are encouraged to attend this event. This important Mass provides a "thank you" and formal sign of appreciation for the volunteers of our parishes and those throughout the Diocese. Fridays in Lent 5 to 7 pm in the Parish Life Center $12.00 Baked & Fried Tilapia, French Fries, Stewed Tomatoes, Creamy Cole Slaw, Corn Fritters, Rolls, Dessert Beverages Available No Reservations Penance Service St. Leo Church is offering a Communal Penance Service on March 13, 2013 at 6:30pm Priests from the area will be available to hear confessions in English, Polish and Spanish. O ur Religious Library, located off the hallway in the Activity Building, has available many full bookcases where you can select materials for your faith and spiritual enrichment. Just take a book, and return it at your convenience. There is no need to check it out. We welcome donations of Catholic religious books; just leave them on the desk in the library. Hours 8am-3pm Monday-Friday Lenten Observations An additional weekday Mass will be celebrated Monday-Friday at 12 noon. The Stations with Mary the Mother of Jesus will be prayed every Friday after the 8 am Mass in the Church. Traditional Stations of the Cross will be prayed every Friday in the Church at 3 pm. Throughout the Diocese of Venice churches will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Fridays from 5-7 pm and Saturday from 9-11 am. A communal Penance service will also be celebrated on March 13 at 6:30pm. A Lenten Parish Mission will be held March 9-12 by Rev. Michael Monshau from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday, February 13, 2013 and Good Friday, March 29, 2013 are days of fast and abstinence. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 years and 59 years (inclusive). On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between in not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent (and Good Friday) are days of abstinence. Note: if a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.
