older dynasty of Khwarazmshahs was originally tributary to<br />

the Samanids, but, during the interval (A.H. 380-407 =A.D. 990-1016)<br />

which separated the decay of these latter rulers from the final ascendency<br />

of the House of Ghazna, it enjoyed a quasi-independence. The following<br />

are those of its rulers whose names occur in history.<br />

i. Mdmiin ibn Muhammad Khwdrazmshdh,<br />

He was originally governor of Gurganj (Jurjaniyya), and in 385/995<br />

captured and killed Abti 'Abdi'llah Khwarazmshah, the lord of Kath,<br />

and> annexed his realms. He himself died in . 387/997 He was succeeded'<br />

by his son<br />

2\ 'Ali ibn Mdmun ibn Muhammad Khwdrazmshdh,<br />

who succeeded his father in the year last mentioned and married<br />

the sister of Sultan fytahmiid of Ghazna Avicenna came to Khwarazm<br />

during his reign, and met with much honour at his hands 2 . The date of<br />

his death is not exactly kftown. Abu'l-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad<br />

as-Suhaylf, a great patron of learning, to whom Avicenna dedicated at<br />

least two of his works 3 was Minister to him and afterwards , to his<br />

brother and successor<br />
