3.2.4 Road Accidents<br />

Section III : Risk Assessment Analysis<br />

• As compared to other Metro cities, the low traffic volume in Jalna is responsible for<br />

very few road accidents in Jalna <strong>district</strong>. However the heavy traffic volume on Jalna<br />

– Aurangabad road, especially due to chemical tankers and tankers carrying<br />

inflammable materials, is responsible for many road accidents.<br />

• There are 967 villages in Jalna <strong>district</strong>. Out of these, 590 villages have been<br />

connected by perennial roads while 187 villages have been connected by seasonal<br />

roads. There is no National Highway in the <strong>district</strong>. The state Highways are 700.490<br />

Kms. long while Z.P. roads are of 2374.31 Kms. lengths. According to Department<br />

of Industrial Safety and Health, there are 10 vehicles carrying hazardous finished<br />

products which move out from Industries within Jalna during a month. According to<br />

Assistant Regional Transport Officer and Police Officials, there are approximately<br />

more than 100 vehicles carrying hazardous materials which either pass through the<br />

<strong>district</strong> or bring raw material for industries within the <strong>district</strong> during a month. These<br />

can become likely causes of road accidents.<br />

• There are 19 Bridges on rivers and 120 Railway Bridges in Jalna <strong>district</strong>.<br />

• The Non-electrified railway routes are of 98 Kms. lengths. There are 15 unmanned<br />

railway crossings in Jalna <strong>district</strong>.<br />

• The <strong>district</strong> administration ranks Road Accidents as the highest priority due to the<br />

seriousness and frequency of previous accident cases in the <strong>district</strong>. Most road<br />

accidents occurred mainly due to carelessness of the drivers.<br />

• According to the <strong>district</strong> administration, the places which are vulnerable to road<br />

accidents are as follows .<br />

• According to Police officials, 2634 Road Accidents occurred in Jalna <strong>district</strong> during<br />

the last 15 years. The number of deaths due to Road Accidents is 671 during the last<br />

15 years. According to the Assistant Regional Transport Officer, the probability of<br />

road accidents in future is medium.<br />

• The Case Histories of Fatal Road Accidents is given in Annexure III.<br />
