8.5 Encouraging Family Level Preparedness
Section VIII : NGOs and Voluntary Agencies
In order to assist the families to prepare themselves, community education programme will be
undertaken to acquaint members of the community with the nature of each disaster, the type
of damage that can occur, the demands it would generate both at family and community level
and the manner in which it will be responded to. Even with the best of planning, it is difficult
to assess the exact impact of the disaster and the response time. Under the circumstances
then, families have to prepare themselves for a prolonged period before the administration
can reach them. Although collective efforts of the community can reduce the hardship to
some extent a large part of the burden would be on the family itself. Hence families would be
encouraged to check for the in-house hazards as also use the given emergency checklist and
prepare itself accordingly.
