2.8 River Systems and Dams
Section III : Risk Assessment Analysis
• The Godavari, Purna and Dudhana are the 3 major rivers which flow through the
district.
• The river Godavari flows along the southern boundary of the district in west to east
direction. The Godavari and its tributaries drain the southern part of the district and
occupy 30% of the area. The drainage pattern of Godavari basin is dendritic.
• Dudhana and Gulati are the major tributaries of river Godavari in the district.
• River Purna is also a tributary of Godavari but has a large catchment and therefore
forms a sub-basin. River Purna flows from the central part of the district. The sub-
basin occupies 65% area of the district . River Purna and its tributary also form a
dendritic drainage pattern.
• The rivers Khelna and Girja are major tributaries of river Purna .
• The extreme north part of the district falls in the Tapi basin . No major river flows
through this region .
• The entire district has been divided into 30 group watersheds with average area of
each group watershed ranging between 150 to 200 Sq. Km. Out of the 29 group
watersheds, 7 group watersheds fall in the Godavari basin, 21 group watersheds fall
in the Purna Sub-basin and only two group watersheds fall in the Tapi basin .
• There is no major dam completed in Jalna district .However, Lower Dudhana Major
dam is under construction on Dudhana river at Bramhawakdi Tq. Partur District Jalna.
• 7 medium projects and 57 minor irrigation projects have been completed in the
district
