7.11 Cyclones<br />

7.11.1 Planning Assumptions<br />

Cyclones can be predicted sufficiently in advance but its impact location over land is<br />

uncertain.<br />

The resource requirements for <strong>management</strong> of cyclone impact is extremely intensive<br />

involving large scale mobilization of resources.<br />

7.11.2 Lead Agencies<br />

The lead agencies are the Fire, Police and Health departments.<br />

Extensive damage to infrastructure and public utilities is possible hence the role of<br />

supporting agencies such as MSEB, Telecommunications and PWD is crucial.<br />

The loss to crop or plantation demands involvement of Agriculture Department<br />

Loss of cattle will bring in the role for Animal Husbandry.<br />

The assistance and intervention of the EOC is essential to support the <strong>district</strong><br />

administration in the <strong>management</strong> of these <strong>disaster</strong>s.<br />

Additionally, secondary <strong>disaster</strong>s such as epidemics may be caused due to floods<br />

resulting from cyclones and must be monitored by Public Health Department.<br />
