DAY 1: Monday, <strong>October</strong> <strong>14</strong>, <strong>2013</strong>: Depart USA<br />

Depart Chicago for your overnight flight to Europe. Dinner<br />

and in flight entertainment will be provided on your trans<br />

Atlantic crossing.<br />

DAY 2: Tuesday, <strong>October</strong> 15:<br />

Arrive Frankfurt, Worms, Mannheim<br />

On arrival in Frankfurt you will be met by your <strong>Gate</strong> 1 staff and<br />

assisted onto a waiting motor coach where sightseeing is<br />

planned in the nearby city of Worms. It was here in 1521<br />

during the “Imperial Diet” that Martin Luther challenged the<br />

Roman Catholic establishment refusing to recant the great<br />

doctrines of Protestantism. Worms is also the place where in<br />

1525 William Tyndale completed the printing of his English<br />

version of the New Testament. <strong>Tour</strong>ing includes a visit to<br />

St. Peter's Church and Luther Memorial near the town<br />

square prior to a visit to nearby Mainz for a photo opportunity of<br />

the Gutenberg Monument dedicated to the <strong>German</strong> printing of<br />

the Bible, the first of it's kind with moveable type. A late<br />

afternoon arrival is planned in Mannheim where you will check<br />

in for dinner and an informal lecture by Dr. Lacopo to set the<br />

stage for the coming tour prior to a well deserved night of rest.<br />

Wednesday, <strong>October</strong> 16:<br />

Heidelberg, Rothenburg, Romantic Road, Stuttgart<br />

Your first full day of touring begins in the one of the great cities of the<br />

world, Heidelberg, ancient capital of the Palatinate and home of<br />

<strong>German</strong>y's oldest university. But this special city will forever be known<br />

as the stronghold of <strong>German</strong> Reformed Protestants beginning in 1560.<br />

It was here in 1563 that the Heidelberg Catechism was produced,<br />

arguably the greatest confessional statement of the Reformation. A visit<br />

is planned to the Heidelberg Castle, a historic landmark of <strong>German</strong>y<br />

that dominates the landscape overlooking the Neckar River. Though<br />

largely in ruins, the structure still evokes several examples of Medieval,<br />

Renaissance, and Baroque <strong>German</strong> architecture. Following a mid-day<br />

break further sightseeing brings you for a journey down the panoramic<br />

"Romantic Road" for a visit to the best preserved medieval town in all of<br />

Europe, Rothenburg. Here you will see the charming Rathaus (town<br />

hall) adorned by a classic tower prior to being given free time to wander<br />

among the many delightful shops and cafes in the area. A wonderful<br />

Thursday, <strong>October</strong> 17: Stuttgart City <strong>Tour</strong>, Augsburg<br />

Today begins with a sightseeing tour of Stuttgart, a city known for many<br />

magnificent vistas and views. The driving tour highlights many impressive<br />

buildings along the city's Cultural Mile and gives you the opportunity to view the<br />

historical centre, with its amazing palacesand old buildings. The tour features<br />

panoramic routes with wonderful views as you head to the top of the hill known<br />

as the Killesberg. On the way you pass the world-famous Weissenhof Estate<br />

with its international architectural milestones, the imposing Villa Reitzenstein,<br />

now the seat of Baden-Württemberg's state government, and the Television<br />

Tower, one of the city's landmarks. Departing Stuttgart brings you for a ride into<br />

the Alpine region of Bavaria where you will learn much about the history of the<br />

Lutheran movement and enjoy a walking tour of Augsburg. It was in this very<br />

small town, in 1518, at St. Anne's Church, that Luther met the papal legate,<br />

Cardinal Cajetan who demanded he submit to the pope. Rich in history,<br />

monumental events of this town include the Augsburg Confession, another<br />

Imperial Diet (1530) and it was in this town hall where the Peace of Augsburg<br />

was signed in 1555, temporarily ending the religious wars in <strong>German</strong>y between<br />

the Catholics and the Protestants. Your time in Augsburg and the lecture of your<br />

guide will tie together local history as it pertains to Lutheran doctrine today. A<br />

late afternoon return is planned back to Stuttgart.<br />

DAY 6: Saturday, <strong>October</strong> 19: Erfurt, Eisleben, Leipzig<br />

Departing Erfurt your first stop of the day is Eisleben,<br />

birthplace of Luther in <strong>14</strong>83. Old manuscripts suggest that<br />

Luther always held his home town close to his heart and it<br />

was where he later died in 1546. This special day includes a<br />

visit to the house of his birth and death, St. Andrews Church<br />

where he preached his last sermon, the Luther Monument,<br />

and St. Anne's Church punctuated by Biblical scenes carved<br />

in stone. Following a mid-day break, the afternoon brings you<br />

to the beautiful city of Leipzig. This afternoon a visit is<br />

planned at Deutsche Zentralstelle für Genealogie where<br />

Dr. Lacopo will walk you through vast archives and share on<br />

the significance of this institution. Following check-in a nearby<br />

hotel, dinner will again be served.<br />

DAY 8: Monday, <strong>October</strong> 21:<br />

Berlin, Deutsches Historisches Museum, Evangelisches<br />

Zentral Archiv<br />

Today is devoted to the sights and sounds of the capital city of<br />

Berlin. Here you will enjoy a guided tour of this fascinating city<br />

including the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg<br />

<strong>Gate</strong> and many other sights of historical importance. <strong>Tour</strong>ing<br />

resumes with your arrival at the fascinating Deutsches<br />

Historisches Museum, devoted to <strong>German</strong> history and a place of<br />

enlightenment and understanding of the shared history of <strong>German</strong>s<br />

and Europeans. Here free time will be given to explore the<br />

specialised research library on <strong>German</strong> and general history as well<br />

as museum work contains more than <strong>22</strong>5,000 volumes, including<br />

13,000 rare books, 40,000 volumes of magazines and<br />

newspapers, 5,000 volumes of militaria and 15,000 museum<br />

catalogues. Your genealogical journey concludes at the<br />

Evangelisches Zentral Archiv where you will again learn more<br />

about your <strong>German</strong> roots with Dr. Lacopo.<br />

DAY 9: Tuesday, <strong>October</strong> <strong>22</strong>: Depart for the United States<br />

Morning transfer is planned to the airport in Berlin for your flight<br />

back to Chicago with fond memories of your <strong>German</strong> <strong>Roots</strong> <strong>Tour</strong><br />

with <strong>Gate</strong> 1 <strong>Travel</strong>.<br />

DAY 5: Friday, <strong>October</strong> 18: Coburg, Erfurt<br />

Your farewell to Stuttgart brings you north where you will view<br />

the fortress of Coburg known as Veste. It was here that<br />

Luther was imprisonment in1530. <strong>Tour</strong>ing resumes with a visit<br />

to the apartment where he stayed and continued his<br />

translation work followed by a nearby chapel where he spoke<br />

and worshiped, and later a gallery of remarkable paintings of<br />

the period. The afternoon will be devoted to the nearby town<br />

of Erfurt, where Luther attended the university. Among the<br />

most memorable stops on tour will be your next visit to the<br />

Augustinian Monastery where Luther spent his early years<br />

as a monk. Here you can touch the famed doors that he<br />

closed on his protesting friends after saying "You can see me<br />

today, but never again." Your experience in Erfurt will be both<br />

enlightening and spiritually uplifting as you learn about<br />

Luther's studies in this town and how they effected his<br />

understanding of scripture. A late afternoon arrival is planned<br />

in a nearby local hotel.<br />

DAY 7: Sunday, <strong>October</strong> 20: Leipzig, Wittenberg, Berlin<br />

Your tour tracing the footsteps of the Reformation continues with<br />

your arrival in a most important city, Wittenberg where Martin<br />

Luther lived and taught for 36 years. Here you will see the<br />

Castle Church door area where Luther posted his 95 Theses,<br />

which marked the beginning of the Reformation. It is also in this<br />

beautiful church Luther is buried. On tour today you will see the<br />

university where Luther taught and later, the Luther House, the<br />

most famous museum in the world dedicated to the history of<br />

the Reformation. Here you will see and learn a detailed history<br />

display of his life, accomplishments, historical documents and<br />

an outstanding collection of paintings depicting his life. The day<br />

draws to a close with your arrival in Berlin.<br />
