Thursday -June 27- Day2: MT. CARMEL- NAZARETH-<br />

Upon arrival, we are greeted by our English-speaking Christian <strong>to</strong>ur guide and<br />

assisted with cus<strong>to</strong>ms and passport control. On <strong>the</strong> drive <strong>to</strong> Mt. Carmel we pass<br />

through <strong>the</strong> beautiful scenery along <strong>the</strong> shores of <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean Sea. Mass is<br />

celebrated at <strong>the</strong> Stella Maris Monastery. Take in <strong>the</strong> breathtaking view of <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn kingdom of Israel and Phoenicia from <strong>the</strong> monastery. See Haifa in <strong>the</strong><br />

distance and ga<strong>the</strong>r for our first group picture before we depart for <strong>the</strong> beautiful<br />

Friday June 28-Day 3 : FEAST OF ST.PETER AND ST.PAUL-<br />

Following buffet breakfast at our hotel we depart for Cana, site of Jesus’s first<br />

miracle, where couples may wish <strong>to</strong> renew <strong>the</strong>ir wedding vows. Be sure <strong>to</strong> bring<br />

your wedding ring and dress up for this special occasion. Our next s<strong>to</strong>p is Mt.<br />

Tabor and <strong>the</strong> Church of Transfiguration where we celebrate Mass and <strong>the</strong>n on<br />

<strong>to</strong> Caesarea Maritima, <strong>the</strong> ancient harbour from which St. Paul set sail <strong>to</strong>wards<br />

Rome and <strong>the</strong> Missionary Journeys which spread Christianity <strong>to</strong> Europa and<br />

eventually <strong>the</strong> whole world. It was here that Peter came <strong>to</strong> understand that <strong>the</strong> Good<br />

News was not only for <strong>the</strong> Jews, but for everyone. We are so blessed <strong>to</strong> be in this<br />

ancient place as <strong>to</strong>day we celebrate <strong>the</strong> Feast Day of St. Peter and St. Paul. Here <strong>Dr</strong>.<br />

Saturday -June 29-Day 4: MINISTRY IN THE GALILEE-<br />

Depart for <strong>the</strong> Sea of Galilee area where we enjoy a morning boat ride and visit <strong>the</strong><br />

“Jesus Boat”, a boat from <strong>the</strong> time of Jesus. Continue <strong>the</strong> day with a visit <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

beautiful Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus taught his followers. Mass is<br />

celebrated on this serene hill overlooking <strong>the</strong> peaceful waters of <strong>the</strong> Sea of Galilee.<br />

Enjoy a lunch of St. Peter’s Fish before departing for Capernaum, home <strong>to</strong> Peter and<br />

one of <strong>the</strong> first <strong>to</strong>wns where <strong>the</strong> gospel was preached. Next we visit <strong>the</strong> Church of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Primacy of Peter, situated on <strong>the</strong> shore of <strong>the</strong> Sea of Galilee. Continue <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Church of Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes and finish <strong>the</strong> day with a drive <strong>to</strong><br />

Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus <strong>to</strong>ld Peter “You are <strong>the</strong> Rock, and upon this rock I<br />

Sunday -June 30- Day 4: NAZARETH- JERICHO- THE DEAD SEA-<br />

Our day begins in Nazareth with Mass in <strong>the</strong> grand Church of <strong>the</strong> Annunciation.<br />

Visit <strong>the</strong> archaeological site, next door <strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong> remains of Nazareth from <strong>the</strong> time<br />

of Jesus. Also, see Mary’s Well and St. Joseph’s Church. Continue <strong>to</strong> Jericho –<br />

<strong>the</strong> first city <strong>to</strong> be captured by Joshua as part of his conquest of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Land</strong>, site of <strong>the</strong><br />

Mount of Temptation. Later, drive <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea and take a dip in <strong>the</strong> mineral<br />

rich water before driving <strong>to</strong> Jerusalem. S<strong>to</strong>p for a Genesis Welcome before<br />

ascending <strong>to</strong> Jerusalem, where we settle in<strong>to</strong> our rooms at <strong>the</strong> beautiful and newly<br />

Monday- July 1- Day 5: TEMPLE MOUNT- WAILING WALL-<br />

Our first s<strong>to</strong>p is <strong>the</strong> Temple Mount and <strong>the</strong> Dome of <strong>the</strong> Rock, holy sites for<br />

Muslims. Next we tuck a prayer in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wailing Wall, <strong>the</strong> holiest site for <strong>the</strong><br />

Jewish people. Mass will be celebrated. At St. Anne’s Church, next <strong>to</strong> which is<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pools of Be<strong>the</strong>sda where Jesus healed <strong>the</strong> Paralytic. Following lunch we see<br />

<strong>the</strong> City of David, Hezekiah’s Tunnel and <strong>the</strong> Pool of Siloam. (B.L.D.)ednesday<br />

- July 03 – Day7: - FOLLOWING THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS TRAIL<br />

Tuesday- July 2- Day 5 : JESUS and THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS-<br />

-including talks by <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Bergsma</strong> & Kando family members<br />

The day starts with a visit <strong>to</strong> Qumran Caves <strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong> place of <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea<br />

Scrolls discovery. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Bergsma</strong> will give a talk about <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea<br />

Scrolls. Next s<strong>to</strong>p is <strong>the</strong> Herodion, <strong>the</strong> monument Herod <strong>the</strong> Great built and <strong>the</strong><br />

place of his burial, one of <strong>the</strong> most fascinating sites in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>. A short drive<br />

takes us <strong>to</strong> Shepherd’s Field and <strong>the</strong> Grot<strong>to</strong>. Lunch is at <strong>the</strong> Christmas Tree<br />

restaurant. Next s<strong>to</strong>p is <strong>the</strong> Manger Square and <strong>the</strong> Church of <strong>the</strong> Nativity – <strong>the</strong><br />

birth place of Christ, <strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong> Grot<strong>to</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Nativity. Next door is St. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine’s<br />

church where we join in <strong>the</strong> joyous Christmas Mass. Continue <strong>to</strong> a Christian<br />

cooperative s<strong>to</strong>re, owned by <strong>the</strong> Kando family that helps support dozens of families.<br />

This is also <strong>the</strong> family of Khalil Iskandar Kando, who brought <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea<br />

Scrolls <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> attention of <strong>the</strong> world. Here we see one of <strong>the</strong> original jars in which<br />

<strong>the</strong> scrolls were kept for thousands of years. Next, visit <strong>the</strong> Israeli Museum <strong>to</strong> see<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dead Sea Scrolls and <strong>the</strong> model city of Jerusalem at <strong>the</strong> time of King David. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> evening, following our dinner, we meet members of <strong>the</strong> Kando family who share<br />

with us s<strong>to</strong>ries of <strong>the</strong>ir famous grandfa<strong>the</strong>r and tell us about <strong>the</strong> life of Christians in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>. (B.L.D.) hursday- July 04- Day 8 : Mt. of Olives- St. Peter in<br />

Wednesday- July 3-Day 6: MT. OF OLIVES- MT. ZION-<br />

The day begins with a visit <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ascension Chapel and <strong>the</strong> Church of Pater<br />

Noster, where Jesus taught <strong>the</strong> Lord’s Prayer. Marvel at <strong>the</strong> panoramic view from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mt. of Olives–seeing <strong>the</strong> eternal golden city and ga<strong>the</strong>r for a group pho<strong>to</strong>. We<br />

walk along Palm Sunday Road s<strong>to</strong>pping at Dominus Flevit where Jesus wept over<br />

<strong>the</strong> city. Continue along <strong>the</strong> Jewish cemetery with a view over <strong>the</strong> Eastern Gate.<br />

Walk in <strong>the</strong> Garden of Ges<strong>the</strong>mene and <strong>the</strong> Church of All Nations. After lunch,<br />

at Ramat Rachel, visit <strong>the</strong> ruins of Caiphas’ Palace under <strong>the</strong> Church of St. Peter<br />

in Gallicantu. Continue <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Upper Room, and <strong>the</strong> Dormition Abbey where<br />

Mass will be celebrated, The day ends with <strong>the</strong> fun and festive farewell dinner at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Tent Restaurant in Bethlehem. (B. L. D.)Frid 9: Via Dolorosa- Ein Karem-<br />

Emmaus- Airport<br />

Thurdsay- July 4- Day 5: VIA DOLOROSA- EIN KAREM-EMMAUS-<br />

Start <strong>the</strong> day early by praying <strong>the</strong> Stations of <strong>the</strong> Cross as we carry <strong>the</strong> cross along<br />

<strong>the</strong> Via Dolorosa, ending with <strong>the</strong> glorius Mass in <strong>the</strong> Church of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong><br />

Sepulchre. We return <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> hotel for breakfast and check out. Enjoy time at leisure<br />

and lunch on your own, perhaps in <strong>the</strong> Old City. Following lunch we depart for Ein<br />

Karem <strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong> Church of Visitation and Mary’s Spring marking <strong>the</strong> birthplace<br />

of St. <strong>John</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist. Time permitting, we s<strong>to</strong>p at Emmaus Abu Gosh, where<br />

Jesus appeared <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> two Disciples after <strong>the</strong> Resurrection. We visit <strong>the</strong> lovely<br />

Crusader Church and meditate in <strong>the</strong> beautiful gardens tended by <strong>the</strong> nuns.<br />

Transfer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> airport for our midnight flight home.<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>John</strong> <strong>Bergsma</strong> is Associate Professor<br />

of Theology at <strong>the</strong> Franciscan University<br />

of Steubenville. He served as a Protestant<br />

pas<strong>to</strong>r for four years before entering <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholic Church in 2001 while pursuing a<br />

Ph.D. in Theology from <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Notre Dame, specializing in <strong>the</strong> Old<br />

Testament and <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea Scrolls. <strong>Dr</strong>.<br />

<strong>Bergsma</strong> speaks regularly at conferences<br />

and parishes nationwide, and has appeared<br />

on EWTN’s The Journey Home, Life on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Rock, Franciscan University Presents,<br />

and Relevant Radio’s <strong>Dr</strong>ew Mariani Show.<br />

He and his wife Dawn reside with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

seven children in Steubenville, Ohio.<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r Dennis Gang, TOR, hails from<br />

Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from what<br />

is now Franciscan University of<br />

Steubenville, with a BA in political<br />

science. He <strong>the</strong>n joined <strong>the</strong> Franciscan<br />

Third Order Regular, was professed in<br />

1973, and ordained <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> priesthood in<br />

1976. He earned his M.Div. from<br />

St. Francis Seminary and an MA in<br />

Theology from Franciscan University in<br />

1986. Fa<strong>the</strong>r Dennis served as a campus<br />

minister at Franciscan University and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Community of God’s Delight in Dallas,<br />

Texas and spent many years in<br />

parish ministry in Fort Worth, Fairfax,<br />

Virginia, and Tampa. He served as <strong>the</strong><br />

chaplain for <strong>the</strong> Franciscan University<br />

study abroad program in Austria and now<br />

works in Student Life at <strong>the</strong> Franciscan<br />

University as a campus minister and as <strong>the</strong><br />

alumni chaplain.
