this is a statement i hear often in my role as chairwoman 

of the Abbott northwestern hospital foundation. it is this 

sense of ownership — this sense of pride — that shows the 

confidence and trust our community has in our hospital, 

Abbott northwestern hospital. 

As we prepared this annual report to donors, it struck me how 

committed our donors are to ensuring that the best health care 

in the world is available at Abbott northwestern hospital, 

right here in the heart of our community. each donation 

makes a positive difference. Contributions help shape the 

depth and breadth of care, innovation and excellence that 

Abbott northwestern delivers to each of us. A world-class city 

needs world-class health care, and we are fortunate to have 

Abbott northwestern as our hospital of choice. 

it is an honor and privilege to serve in a volunteer role at 

Abbott northwestern. A special thanks to Jeffrey d. peterson, 

our hospital president, and richard Meyer, president of the 

foundation, and their professional, dedicated teams who guide

Supporting nursing 

excellence and education in 2009 

Ask anyone who has been hospitalized or has cared about someone 

hospitalized at Abbott Northwestern, and you will likely hear 

a common theme: the difference excellent nursing care makes. 

At Abbott northwestern, nursing has 

always been at the forefront of the 

hospital’s excellence. the nursing 

department includes more than 2,000 

nurses who serve as the integrators of 

patient care, ensuring best practices 

and positive patient outcomes. More 

than 380 nurses have served the 

organization for 25 years or more — 

evidence of Abbott northwestern’s 

commitment to the profession and 

the unique environment it has 

cultivated for nursing practice. 

what does it take to create an 

optimal environment for nursing 

practice? According to terry Graner, 

vice president, patient Care services, 

the key is creating a professional, 

collaborative environment that

supports continuous learning. “our 

goal is to have nurses work in an 

environment that is patient- and 

family-centered,” said Graner. “each 

day, we strive to create the type 

of environment where rns at the 

bedside influence care decisions that 

are made.” 

An established collaborative 

governance structure ensures 

that nurses have a strong voice 

in improving patient care and 

monitoring nursing practice, Graner 

said. “Collaborative governance 

centers around the ability of the rns 

to influence decision-making. it starts 

at the individual units and extends 

across the entire hospital.” 

Celebrating nurses in 2009 

the Abbott northwestern hospital 

foundation has been a long-time 

supporter of continuing education for 

nurses and, in 2009, dedicated funds

raised at its annual Gala to support 

nursing excellence. the co-chairs for 

the october benefit, holly denis and 

linda Goldenberg, are both strong 

advocates for the nursing profession. 

“patient care at Abbott northwestern 

is truly a team effort, and the more 

professional, stable and well-trained 

that team is, the better it is for the 

patient,” said denis. “A huge piece of 

that team is the nursing staff.” 

“personally, i know the quality of 

nursing care at Abbott northwestern 

to be wonderful,” said Goldenberg. 

“we are very fortunate to have this 

type of care available in Minneapolis. 

if we don’t have excellent nurses, then 

we don’t have a hospital that serves our 

community well.” 

Graner said, “the foundation has 

been incredibly supportive of the 

nursing department. this support 

helps us improve nursing practice at 

Abbott northwestern and raise the 

standards for the profession as 

a whole.”

Abbott Northwestern joins 

elite group of hospitals in 

achieving magnet status 

In February 2009, the American Nurses Credentialing 

Center (ANCC) awarded Magnet Recognition Program® 

status to Abbott Northwestern—the highest level of 

recognition awarded to fewer than five percent of all 

U.S. hospitals. 

“Abbott Northwestern’s success and reputation for 

exceptional patient care is based largely on the 

excellence of our nurses,” said Jeffrey D. Peterson, 

president of Abbott Northwestern. “They are an 

essential part of our care team and are most deserving 

of this recognition. Magnet designation is outside 

verification of all the reasons we are so proud of our 

Nursing Department.” 

The Magnet status recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing 

practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. 

According to the ANCC, Magnet hospitals consistently deliver better patient outcomes, including 

more time nurses spend at the patient’s bedside, shorter lengths of patient stay, lower patient 

mortality rates, higher patient satisfaction rates, and higher nurse 

retention, recruitment and job satisfaction rates.

A new form of radiation therapy using 

breakthrough technology is now available 

at Abbott northwestern’s Virginia piper 

Cancer institute. 

the trilogy® linear Accelerator with 

rapidArc is up to eight times faster 

than conventional forms of radiotherapy, 

making it more comfortable for patients 

and allowing them to spend much less 

time in the clinic for daily 

treatments. 

Breakthrough radiation therapy 

technology funded through philanthropy 

“rapidArc radiotherapy 

treatment delivers a tumortargeting 

beam with unprecedented 

speed and precision,” 

said Katie schwarzkopf, 

manager, Virginia piper 

Cancer institute’s radiation 

oncology department. 

“this therapy differs from 

existing techniques because it delivers 

doses to the whole tumor in a single arc 

rotation, minimizing the patient’s time on 

the treatment table. the treatment ensures 

high precision, which helps spare the 

patient’s normal, healthy tissue.” 

Abbott northwestern is one of only 15 

sites nationwide and 70 sites worldwide 

to offer this technology. 

the purchase of the trilogy ® linear 

Accelerator was made possible by a 

$3.9 million grant from the Abbott 

northwestern hospital foundation in 

2009. funds for the grant came from the 

Virginia piper Cancer institute’s Vision 

Campaign, which raised $37.4 million 

from more than 12,000 donors in support 

of collaborative, compassionate cancer 

diagnosis, treatment and care.

A holistic approach to treating 

depression and anxiety 

in the fall of 2007, 38-year-old rachel* 

made a life-changing decision. A wife, 

mother of two and successful business 

owner in Minneapolis, rachel had 

read The Chemistry of Joy by holistic 

psychiatrist henry emmons, Md. 

she was impressed by his approach to 

treating depression, stress and anxiety 

by blending the best of western 

science and eastern philosophy. 

“since childhood, i had struggled with 

mood issues, and they worsened with 

the hormonal changes brought on by 

having children. i was feeling very sad 

and overwhelmed,” she explained. “i 

had a good life, yet i couldn’t enjoy it.” 

when she discovered that emmons 

was starting a resilience training 

program at Abbott northwestern’s 

penny George institute for health and 

healing, she immediately signed up 

for an initial consultation with him 

and then enrolled in the program. 

today, rachel describes the program as 

instrumental in helping her to better 

manage her depression. “when you’re 

anxious or depressed, it’s difficult to 

know where to turn,” she explained. 

“with the help of this program, i 

learned to accept what was and wasn’t 

within my control. i draw on the tools 

that i learned in the resilience training 

each day.” 

participants in the resilience training 

program go to group sessions with 12 

to 16 participants who meet once a 

week for eight weeks. they also go 

to individual sessions with a clinical 

nutritionist and an exercise physiologist, 

and they continue to work with 

their own physicians throughout the 

program. 

Positive results 

the George institute’s research shows 

that participants in the program 

improve in all measured areas 

including mood, anxiety, sleep and 

pain—even when these symptoms 

had been chronic for patients prior 

to completing the program.

Health and Healing, which was founded in 2003 and has become a national leader in 

integrative health focused on the mind, body and spirit.

training facilitator’s manual to train 

more health care professionals to 

conduct the program.

to expand resilience training. our 

goal is to make this program available 

to as many people who suffer from 

depression and anxiety as possible.”

Reinventing 

primary care 

Through a grant from the 

Robina Foundation, the 

Medicine Clinic is developing 

an innovative approach to 

primary care. 

when you first enter the Medicine 

Clinic at 28th street and Chicago 

Avenue in Minneapolis, the only 

visible signs that the clinic has 

developed one of the nation’s most 

innovative approaches to primary 

care are three private cubicles located 

in the lobby. these work spaces house 

three new staff members funded 

through a multi-million dollar grant 

from the robina foundation. 

these professionals are care guides 

who help more than 330 of the 

clinic’s patients who have diabetes, 

hypertension or heart failure. the 

Medicine Clinic, also known as 

Abbott northwestern hospital 

General Medicine Associates, offers 

primary care to adults, especially 

those with chronic medical 

conditions. the clinic is staffed by

internal medicine residents and 

physicians who care for a diverse 

population of patients regardless of 

their ability to pay or speak english. 

before the robina Care Guide project 

was launched, 34 percent of Medicine 

Clinic patients were not meeting 

the clinical goals developed by their 

primary care physicians. nine months 

after the project commenced, that 

figure was reduced to 22 percent, 

according to research done in 

partnership with the university of 

Minnesota school of public health. 

the care guides do not have clinical 

backgrounds. rather, their focus is 

on helping patients manage their 

chronic diseases through one-on-one 

counseling, support in navigating 

the care system, and assistance and 

encouragement with appropriate 

self-care. the goal is to help patients 

make good decisions about their care 

and lifestyles, enabling them to better 

manage their health. 

richard Adair, Md, has practiced 

internal medicine at Abbott 

northwestern for 35 years and serves 

as the principal study investigator for 

the robina Care Guide project. the 

chronic conditions treated through 

the project are common, deadly if not 

managed properly, and have effective 

treatments available for them, Adair 

said. “nationally, the statistics are not 

pretty. fewer than half of American 

patients with diabetes, hypertension 

or heart failure achieve their goals.” 

“this is part of a national movement 

to support primary care, and it has 

been great for our patients and the 

morale of our physicians,” added 

Adair. “we’re hoping that this project 

will encourage more medical students 

to select primary care as their career 

choice. our success is a team effort 

and is putting Abbott northwestern 

and Allina at the forefront of 

reinventing how patient-centered 

medicine is practiced.”

Helping clients live well with HiV/AiDS 

Michael Jennings was living 

in a nursing home with 

HIV/AIDS when one of his 

caregivers recommended he 

try Abbott Northwestern’s 

Park House program. 

two years later, Jennings credits 

park house’s services and staff with 


enabling him to leave the nursing 

home — something he thought would 

be impossible. park house’s exercise 

therapy helped him regain strength.

friendship and a sense of hope for a 

better life. education on life skills 

and cognitive therapy helped him 

think for himself and improve his 

short-term memory, which had been 

damaged by his disease. 

“i really feel that park house has 

granted me a wonderful opportunity 

to accept my hiV and live with it,” 

Jennings said. 

founded in 1996, park house is one 

of only a few programs in the united 

states providing day health services 

for people living with hiV/Aids. 

the program serves the Minneapolis 

area and offers clients nursing care, 

psychosocial support, nutrition 

services, creative and complementary 

therapies, and collaborative 

treatment planning with physicians 

and case managers. the park house 

staff includes a phd psychologist, 

therapeutic recreation specialist, 

mental health therapist, pharmacist, 

chaplain, nurses and volunteers. 

in 2009, park house moved from the 

Crosby Mansion on park Avenue 

down the street to the phillips eye 

institute Medical office building. 

the move was done to help eliminate 



Compassion 

the expensive and challenging 

maintenance and utility needs that 

come with an older building. 

Clients like the new location, which 

offers the anonymity of being in a 

building with other services, said 

James Maurer, park house manager. 

the new space is easy to access, 

comfortably furnished and warmly 

decorated. 

park house services are made 

possible by the generosity of donors. 

“philanthropic support is what will 

keep park house going to support the 

ever changing needs of persons living 

with hiV/Aids,” Maurer said. 

park house has adapted over the years 

to the needs of its clients, who in 

1996 faced an end-of-life disease, but 

today face a chronic illness that they 

may live with for many years. 

“park house empowers our clients with 

a renewed self-image and ability to take 

part in the community in which they 

live and will continue to live,” Maurer 

said. “our clients have learned that life 

is not over for them.”

New program provides a caring presence to hospital patients dying alone 

At some point in their careers, 

most nurses will have the poignant 

challenge and privilege of caring for a 

patient who is at the end of life. 

one group of nurses recognized that 

this situation is made more complex 

if the patient is dying alone. “it 

tears a nurse apart to leave a patient 

dying alone in their hospital room,” 

said laura sandquist, rn, council 

chairwoman of a Medical/surgical 

unit at Abbott northwestern. 

with the support of a grant from 

the Abbott northwestern hospital 

foundation, sandquist and a small 

group of colleagues launched the no 

one dies Alone program (nodA). 

the initiative enlists compassionate 

volunteers to offer a quiet, calm 

presence for patients who are dying 

alone in the hospital. 

“i received 70 emails within the first 

three days of asking for volunteers,” 

said sandquist. only registered nurses 

were asked to volunteer in the pilot 

program. “nurses already have the 

training and screening necessary for 

direct patient contact. this was the 

most logical approach because it is 

“overAll, this experience feels completely divine – 

this is humAne And the right thing to do.” 

—no one dies Alone volunteer 

the most efficient use of our time and 

resources.” 

the pilot ran six months, starting 

in september 2009. since then, a 

team of 30 volunteers and two phone 

coordinators are continuing the work 

as a permanent hospital program. 

because the program is volunteer 

driven and requires few supplies, 

it will require little in the way of 

overhead costs long-term, sandquist 

said. 

“our first and foremost goal is to do 

the best and right thing for these 

patients,” said sandquist. “it also 

helps us offer assurance for families 

who may not be able to be with 

their loved ones during their final, 

vulnerable moments. And, nodA 

is a resource for the nurses who are 

caring for these patients, but cannot 

be with them at all times. it gives 

them comfort knowing that someone 

will be there.” 

Abbott Northwestern enhances its service to military men and women 

in 2009, Abbott northwestern hospital opened the 

liberty Club — a private waiting area with a welcoming 

environment and personalized services for military 

personnel, veterans, and their family and friends.

“this is a way for our hospital to show its gratitude to 

the men and women who have served our country,” 

said desiree Abele, supervisor of Volunteer and Guest 

services. 

The club features: 

• a recognition wall honoring service men and women 

• a 50-inch, flat-screen TV with Blu-Ray donated by 

best buy 

• a guest computer and telephone 

• a large picture window overlooking the Abbott 

northwestern mall. 

Volunteers generously give their time to serve as hosts 

in the club. 

the liberty Club was born out of project hero, a 

demonstration initiative with humana Veterans health 

Care services, Abbott northwestern hospital and the 

Veterans Administration hospitals in Minnesota.

by leaving 

a legacy 

Merle stromberg dobbs was born in 1921 and grew up on a dairy farm in buffalo, 

Minn. in 1957, she married leonard dobbs after they met at the insurance company 

where they spent their entire careers. As newlyweds, they lived in south Minneapolis. 

later, they moved to edina. 

both Merle and leonard, who passed away in 2009 and 2005 respectively, were cared 

for at Abbott northwestern in the 1980s — Merle for breast cancer and leonard for 

cardiac valve replacement surgery through the Minneapolis heart institute ® . 

“they lived private lives,” said scott Vergin, Merle’s nephew, who helped care for 

Merle after leonard’s death. Vergin, who works as a portfolio manager at thrivent 

financial for lutherans, was asked by Merle to help handle her estate upon her death. 

“My aunt was very health conscious and kept meticulous records of her medical care,” 

explained Vergin. “she and her husband were treated very well and successfully at 

Abbott northwestern, and this had a big impact on her.” 

of his aunt’s planned legacy gift to Abbott northwestern, Vergin feels that his aunt 

wanted to give to an institution where she could make an impact—and recognize 

the difference that it made in her life. “the most important lesson in my aunt’s gift is 

that one should always be respectful and give good service, and you never know when 

it will be repaid back to you,” explained Vergin. “both she and my uncle received 

excellent care from the people at Abbott northwestern over their lives. they had 

good health outcomes, lived long lives and wanted to give back to a place where they 

knew good work was being done.” 


Leonard and Merle Dobbs

investing in a passion for integrative health 

A passion for a more holistic 

approach to health led doug baker, 

sr., and Carole baker to make a 

planned gift to Abbott northwestern’s 

penny George institute for health 

and healing. 

doug and Carole have been interested 

in integrative medicine for decades. 

As a teenager, doug sought out 

integrative therapies for his health 

care needs. Carole has practiced 

iyengar Yoga for 30 years and is also 

certified as an instructor. throughout 

her life, she has applied the concepts 

of holistic health, many of which 

she learned in her study of yoga, to 

herself and her family including the 

importance of a healthy diet and 

meditation. 

when shirley billigmeier was 

diagnosed with breast cancer in July 

2009, she found comfort in action. 

she immediately went into research 

mode, discussing options with her 

surgeon and oncologist, determining 

her best course of treatment and 

purchasing a wig for what seemed an 

inevitable part of her fight against 

cancer — the loss of hair during 

chemotherapy. 

“At various times in our lives, we’ve 

needed and sought out more and 

different types of care,” said doug. 

“there are many ways to care for 

health issues that are less invasive 

and require fewer pharmaceuticals 

than what our culture has often 

called traditional medicine.” 

their affiliation with Abbott 

northwestern is personal. As a 

patient, doug has benefitted from 

the inpatient services provided by 

the George institute. 

“this gift is a natural fit for us,” 

explained doug. “we’re really excited 

about the leadership at the hospital, 

and Allina deserves huge credit for 

moving Abbott northwestern in this 

direction.” 

Two breast cancer survivors inspired to help others 

Shirley Billigmeier with her “Dream Team” of 

medical professionals, friends and family who 

helped her during chemotherapy 

As she was preparing to start 

chemotherapy, she learned about 

another option to hair loss — cold 

cap therapy. widely used by cancer 

patients in europe, the cold cap 

option is relatively unknown and 

rarely used in the united states. 

Cold caps are precisely cooled to a 

subzero temperature, then placed 

on the patient’s scalp at specific 

intervals during chemotherapy. 

studies have shown that the majority 

of users can save their hair or greatly 

reduce the amount lost as a result of 

chemotherapy. 

“As i learned more about this option 

from people across the country, 

i decided that i would try the 

technology,” explained billigmeier. 

when shirley and her friend, 

nancy Marshall, also a breast cancer 

survivor, examined the cap plan, they 

realized that a major barrier was the

lack of a biomedical freezer at Abbott 

northwestern that could keep the 

caps at the required temperature. 

Marshall organized a fundraising 

drive for the freezer, and through the 

generosity of friends who donated 

funds to the Abbott northwestern 

hospital foundation, a freezer had 

arrived by the time billigmeier 

underwent the second of six chemotherapy 

treatments. she went through 

the chemotherapy process and by the 

end of her treatments, she still had 

her hair—something that amazed her 

chemotherapy nurses and oncologist. 

“i wasn’t going to let hair loss 

interfere with my health,” said 

billigmeier. “but the instant i knew 

i had an option, it absolutely helped 

me tolerate the effects of my chemotherapy. 

when you are able to keep 

your hair, you can focus on other parts 

of your healing.”
