More reveal<strong>in</strong>g are the two examples <strong>of</strong> BP prepositions that were acquired before<br />

the correspond<strong>in</strong>g BP nouns: cwe'eh 'side' and làa'<strong>in</strong>y '<strong>in</strong>' (Vanesa). Aga<strong>in</strong>, an analysis <strong>in</strong><br />

which the body part and locative mean<strong>in</strong>g are both nouns would have a difficult time<br />

account<strong>in</strong>g for this dissociation. If the locative mean<strong>in</strong>g is based upon the body part<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>al mean<strong>in</strong>g, how could the child acquire the locative mean<strong>in</strong>g without also hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

acquired the BP noun?<br />

If, <strong>in</strong>stead, the BP locatives are prepositions, as I argue, this dissociation is <strong>in</strong> fact<br />

expected. One would predict that the BP nouns would be acquired <strong>in</strong> the order that<br />

children acquire nouns, and that the BP prepositions would be acquired <strong>in</strong> the same order<br />

as children acquire prepositions. Section 4.4.2 below will address the question <strong>of</strong> cross-<br />
