<strong>The</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> preposition is dictated by the relationship between the figure and the<br />

ground and not by any potential geography or orientation <strong>of</strong> the ground. I believe this<br />

argues strongly aga<strong>in</strong>st the analysis <strong>of</strong> these constructions as possessed NPs, s<strong>in</strong>ce that<br />

analysis would not be able to account for semantic effects such as these.<br />

2.7 Explanation for Ambiguous Sentences<br />

Recogniz<strong>in</strong>g that BP prepositions are syntactically dist<strong>in</strong>ct from BP nouns also<br />

provides explanatory power. Consider sentence (14) below, which is ambiguous between<br />
