<strong>The</strong> number follow<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Zapotec</strong> words refers to the page number <strong>in</strong> the correspond<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dictionary. <strong>The</strong> SJGZ data was provided by Martínez (personal communication). “--” mark cells<br />

<strong>in</strong> which no cognate could be found.<br />

Table 4 demonstrates that every body part word under consideration is undeniably a body<br />

part word <strong>in</strong> each language; cwe'eh 'side' is the only exception to this, and the fact that it<br />

can be used as a body part word <strong>in</strong> some VZ languages, but not others, is very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2.2 <strong>Body</strong> <strong>Part</strong> <strong>Prepositions</strong><br />

Just as Table 4 confirmed the status <strong>of</strong> the words as body parts, Table 5 seeks to<br />

confirm the use <strong>of</strong> these words <strong>in</strong> locative constructions. <strong>The</strong> term appears <strong>in</strong> bold if it is<br />

used <strong>in</strong> locative constructions <strong>in</strong> the given language, and appears <strong>in</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> type if I have<br />

no evidence that it can be used <strong>in</strong> a locative construction <strong>in</strong> that language.<br />
