for mutual compensati<strong>on</strong>, but leave nothing over for the poor, as if they were afraid that whatever<br />

is gratuitously bestowed would be lost.<br />

14. And thou shalt be blessed. Christ pr<strong>on</strong>ounces those to be blessed who exercise liberality<br />

without any expectati<strong>on</strong> of earthly reward; for they manifestly look to God. Those who c<strong>on</strong>stantly<br />

keep in view their own advantage, or who are driven by the gale of popularity, have no right to<br />

expect a reward from God.<br />

murderers, and burnt up their city. 8. Then he to his master. Then the master of the house, being<br />

said to his servants, The marriage is indeed ready, angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the<br />

but those who were invited were not worthy. streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither<br />

9. Go then to the highways, and whomsoever you the poor, and the maimed, and the lame, and the<br />
