DJURGÅRDEN TOUR (6 hrs)
The tour takes you along the Strandvägen Boulevard on the shores of Nybroviken bay through the
diplomatic quarters with embassies and ambassadors’ residences to Royal Djurgården. This immensely
popular recreation area in the heart of Stockholm used to be the private hunting grounds of the
Swedish kings. Here, you visit the famous Vasa Museum, Junibacken (Astrid Lindgren tales with for
example Karlsson på taket and Pippi Longstockings) and Skansen Open Air Museum. The three
museums are located within walking distance from each other. The Vasa Museum and Junibacken are
located next to each other and Skansen is a nice 10 min. walk away.
The Vasa man-of-war was built at the Royal Dockyards in Stockholm in 1628, and on August 10th
that year she set sail on her maiden voyage. Before she reached the outskirts of Stockholm she heeled
so strongly from a sudden gust of wind that water started to pour in through her lower gun ports,
and the Vasa sunk in 100 feet of water. Several attempts were made to recover the ship, but it was
not until April 1961 that she was raised from the sea. The restoration of the ship, often referred to as
the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle, is now complete and in June 1990 the new Vasa Museum opened its
doors to the public.
Junibacken is the house of Fantasy Play. The Storybook Train is central to Junibacken with its
journey through the fabulous stories of Astrid Lindgren. The Train ride is available in 12 languages.
You can be guided along your journey in Swedish, Arabic, English, Finnish, French, Dutch, Italian,
Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Spanish or German. There is also a playground, a library, a gift shop and
a restaurant/café at Junibacken.
Here you will also be given free time!
Skansen is the first open-air museum in the world. Skansen is also a zoological park specializing mainly
in Nordic fauna. Skansen was founded in 1891 by Arthur Hazelius (1833-1901) for the purpose of
showing how people had lived and worked in different parts of Sweden in times gone by. Over the
years about 150 historic buildings have been moved here from nearly every part of Sweden. Most of
them date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors to the houses and farmsteads are met by hosts
and hostesses in period costume. They often demonstrate domestic occupations, such as weaving and
spinning. There is also a glass work where you can see how they blow glass and buy unic items only
sold here!
At Skansen you will be given free time - there are a lot to visit and many options for a quick lunch!
