a little more alive…
“By the water,” is by far the most common answer when
people are asked where they would like to live, go on
holiday or just be for a day. perhaps the simple explanation
is that more than 70 percent of our body is composed of
water, so we are attracted to the same element.
Or perhaps we’re attracted by the feeling of endless
freedom, the views and the coolness and all the pleasures
that the water has to offer us. We become a little more alive
on the water’s edge.
In Gävle, water is absolutely present. The city is
returning to the areas around the port that, for centuries,
were vital to its existence.
Two other waterways – the rivers of Gavleån and Testeboån
– bring life to sectors as varied as fishing and the arts.
The Hamrånge area, on the northern coast, and the fishing
villages of Bönan and Hedesunda on the River Dalälven
also have an attractive charm and natural pride.
Welcome to a living Gävle. By the water.
The Gavle Goat and
the “Mer Jul i Gävle”
celebrations
Gävle’s biggest celebrity is without doubt the Gavle
Goat – not just because it is 13 metres tall in its bare
hooves, but because every year people in more than
100 countries follow its fate.
In Gävle, we delight in the light and Christmas
cheer spread by our dear Gavle Goat. Snow-covered,
with the lamps lit, and the City Hall as a beautiful
backdrop, the Gavle Goat has become an irreplaceable
part of Christmas in Gävle.
The “Mer Jul i Gävle” celebrations take place
throughout December. Christmas lights sparkle
invitingly in the streets, squares and buildings. Shops
and malls add to the magic atmosphere with seasonal
offers and activities for young and old. “Mer Jul i
Gävle” is our way of
bringing light and
warmth to the darkest
month of the year.
BRYNÄS IF is one of Sweden’s classic ice hockey teams, has won twelve Swedish championships and dominated Swedish ice hockey in the
1960s and 1970s. The name brynäs comes from an area of gävle. its black top with yellow and red stripes has been worn by players such as
Tord lundström, börje Salming, lars göran nilsson, Mats näslund and nicklas bäckström. brynäs plays home games in the läkerol arena,
which has a spectator capacity of 8,400 people.
GEFLE IF FOTBOLL, a local football team, has established itself in allsvenskan, the Swedish premier league, and has been a stable team in
the middle of the table over the last few seasons. however, the club won the von rosen trophy for the first time in 1902, which can be counted
as the Swedish championships of that era. perhaps it’s not so surprising, because gefle iF was one of the first sports associations in the
country to play football. its home stadium is Strömvallen, which is within easy walking distance of the city centre.
ThE GAVLE GOAT saw its first christmas lights in 1966. but at the end of that year it was burnt down and a tradition was born, for better
or worse. The initiative behind the large straw goat came from advertising man Stig gavlén. The goat stands 13 metres tall on Slottstorget from
early December. news about the gavle goat appears in international media and every year thousands of people follow its fate via webcams.
The elegant silver goat in the picture is designer gunnar cyrén’s interpretation of gävle’s biggest celebrity.
LÄKEROL is one of Sweden’s best known brands. The little throat pastille originates in leipzig in germany, but it was when factory owner
adolf ahlgren took it to gävle in 1909 that everything took off. in 1911 more than 2 million boxes were sold just in Sweden and Denmark. The
“a” in the middle of the pastille is founder adolf ahlgren’s signature. läkerol is now available all around the world in number of forms, including
chewing gum. läkerol makes people talk!
GEVALIA is Sweden’s most popular coffee and is widely known for its prize-winning ‘unexpected guests’ advertising campaigns. The name
simply means gävle in latin, and coffee has been roasted here since around 1915. coffee was brought to Sweden as long ago as 1685, but it
wasn’t until the mid-1800s that it became a popular drink. liquor manufacturers felt so threatened by the drink that they forced a prohibition
on coffee drinking, but this was soon rescinded due to protests.
BÖNABÖCKLING, the gulf of bothnia’s golden kippers, a taste sensation. Delicious on crisp bread with butter and perhaps some sliced
cold new potatoes. Some people talk about smoked “böckling”, but it’s not. bönaböckling is herring that is soaked in brine overnight
and then smoked for up to 90 minutes using spruce. enjoy it by the sea, with a cold beer. There is also a local, sweeter variety, which is
dry-fried herring.
Do WHAT THE
LoCALS Do!
Simple pleasures and amusements can give you
a lot in return. Here a few suggestions for activities
that people who live in Gävle also enjoy doing.
32
… go for a picnic in Boulognerskogen
and let the kids play on the climbing
frames, swings and slides. Challenge
your friends to a round of mini-golf.
… stroll among the low wooden
houses in Gefle old Town and feel the
atmosphere of life in the 1700s. Enjoy
a cup of coffee at the little garden café.
If you’re lucky, there’ll be an auction
going on nearby.
… quench your thirst at one of
the city’s street restaurants and
watch the world go by from the
front row.
… walk along Gavleån quayside towards
the sea and back to the city centre again.
Maybe you’ll brighten up the day of
someone who’s trying their luck at fishing.
… sit in Stadsträdgården
for a while, gazing at
the Carl Milles statue of
musical angels. The blue
tiled concert hall is on the
other side of the water.
… take a closer look
at the local delicacies
on the market stands.
Kippers, herring,
salmon and other
fish lie there invitingly
on thick layers of
crushed ice.
… walk between Gävle’s public
sculptures. Maps and information are
available from Gävle Tourist office and
the art centre, Gävle Konstcentrum.
… listen to the chimes of the
City Hall’s clock, which plays
traditional seasonal tunes.
Played at 9.00, 12.00, 15.00
and 18.00.
