Axe and Crown presented the Princess<br />

Elizabeth Tudor, afterward Qiicen of Eng-<br />

land, in the mode of an amateur, with<br />

occasional flashes of brilliancy; Miss Cav-<br />

endish, a large, ponderous, unimportant<br />

belle, who plodded sturdily over the dusty<br />

highway of commonplace; and Mrs. Lang-<br />

try, the absurdest of actresses, whose pro-<br />

fessional stock in trade consisted of her<br />

social notoriety, her face, her figure, and<br />

the garments and jewels wherewith said<br />

figure was indued, — the garments being<br />

tagged with their " creators' " names, and<br />

bearing price marks still intentionally le-<br />

gible. In the scale of merit were Miss<br />

Neilson, Mr. Mathews, Mr. Wyndham,<br />

Mr. Irving, and Miss Terry. Mr. Toole's<br />

name ought, I suppose, to be added to the<br />

list of honor. But his tour in this country<br />

was far from fortunate, and he made no<br />

deep impression either upon the critics or<br />

the public. I remember his acting, and<br />
