faultless. His grace, ease, refinement, per-<br />

fect modesty, absolute freedom from affec-<br />

tation, coupled with his swift responsive-<br />

ness in facial expression and in speech,<br />

made conversation with him a delight and<br />

a privilege. And to the traits which have<br />

been mentioned is to be added a peculiar<br />

simplicity, which appeared to be the quint-<br />

essence of the infinite variety of his life.<br />
