Mr. Ledger and Michonnet, Tem-<br />

pleton Jitt and Jesse Rural, Sir Harcourt<br />

Courtly and Tony Lumpkin, Triplet and<br />

Dogberry, Goldfinch and -Sir Peter Teazle,<br />

— that is the list of Mr. Warren's contrast-<br />

ing impersonations which I took for one of<br />

my texts in The Atlantic Monthly a dozen<br />

years ago. Fifty other pairs would have<br />

served about equally well, and the thought<br />

of any half a dozen of the coupled impersonations<br />

will avail to move my memory<br />

to glorious laughter, or to thrill it with the<br />

delicious pain of acute sympathy, or to<br />

enchant it with the recognition of consum-<br />

mate beauty. It is impossible to estimate<br />

how much such an actor has added to the<br />

pure pleasure of the community, or how<br />

potent a factor he was as an educator of<br />
