there are no women on its supreme bench,<br />

and none sit in its jury boxes; it has thus<br />

far escaped a law which makes it a felony<br />

for an unmarried man to decline an un-<br />

married woman's offer of marriage. But<br />

Mrs. Curtis's adumbration of some less<br />

violent but highly significant changes was<br />

remarkable. She really predicted, in the<br />

next sequent generation of young women,<br />

that union of virile athleticism and sopho-<br />

moric abandon which makes the manners<br />

of the twentieth-century girl so engaging.<br />

Ours, by T. W. Robertson, was pro-<br />

duced at Selwyn's in the spring of 1868,<br />

and was succeeded, in 1869, by School,<br />

My Lady Clara, and The Nightingale, by<br />

the same playwright; and within a few<br />

months, on either side of these two years,<br />

David Garrick, Society, Caste, Play, Home,<br />

War, and The M. P. were given at most of<br />
