gift in pathos, was Uncle Tom when I saw<br />

the play ;<br />

Miss Gaszynski, who had been<br />

doing pas seuls and other dances between<br />

pieces, and had been promoted to be Topsy,<br />

made a remarkable hit, and was said to<br />

have won a desirable husband by the ec-<br />

centric drollery of her impersonation \ and<br />

Mrs. Vincent, then a slim and swift young<br />

woman, was a flaming and, by the familiar<br />

law of nerve calorics, blood-chilling Gassy.<br />

It is worth noting that the playwright did<br />

not then dare to risk the popularity of his<br />

work by repeating the final tragedy of the<br />

novel, and that the drama closed with the<br />

rescue of Uncle Tom by George Shelby<br />

from the murderous hands of Legree.<br />

Through all the curious fluctuations in<br />

public taste during fifty years, the play<br />

keeps the stage to this day, having suf-<br />

fered shameful misuse in some quarters,<br />

and depending upon packs of real blood-<br />

hounds, and upon " star combinations "<br />
