cently in accord with the rh}i:hmic scheme<br />

of the verse. William Shakespeare, or<br />

John Fletcher, or whoever is responsible<br />

for Wolsey's share of the dialogue, would<br />

have been tickled by the actor's perform-<br />

ance, which was in the line of the " de-<br />

scant " that Elizabethan gentlemen were<br />

expected to be able to supply with the<br />

voice, upon any melody, at short notice.<br />

Madame Janauschek is so near the pre-<br />

sent day that it has seemed best to me not<br />

to make her work the theme of extended<br />

comment. Her achievement on our stage<br />

was great, considering the handicap which<br />

she sustained in dealing with a foreign<br />

language; she had a large style, and her<br />

playing was steadily marked by intellectual<br />

clarity and emotional power. Her unique<br />

performance, the assumption of the French<br />

waiting maid, Hortense, in the stage ver-<br />

sion of Dickens's Bleak House, played<br />
