A DRAMATIC CRITIC<br />

in Leeds, March 3, 1848, and was the<br />

daughter of an actress of no great ability.<br />

As a young girl, she had employment in<br />

a mill, as a nurserymaid, as a barmaid,<br />

and as a member of a theatrical corps<br />

de ballet ; having been befriended, at the<br />

beginning of her career on the stage, by<br />

Captain, afterward Admiral, Henry Carr<br />

Glyn, a noted officer of the British navy.<br />

Through all the occupations just now<br />

mentioned she must have passed before<br />

she was eighteen years of age, since her<br />

debut as Juliet was made at Margate in<br />

1865. Her success was immediate, and<br />

her repertory soon embraced many parts<br />

in Shakespearean and other dramas. She<br />

made her first appearances in America<br />

and in Boston during the autumn and win-<br />

ter of 1872-73; and afterward, in a nearly<br />

unbroken succession of seasons, she acted<br />

in most of the chief cities of this country,<br />

until the winter of 1879-80. On the 15th<br />

of August, 1880, after many months of<br />
